Paju Heyri café with a separate dog zone, 4th visit: Heuksadang

In short

Heuksadang is a handmade donut and bingsu (shaved ice dessert) bakery café in a standalone two-floor building in Heyri Art Village, Paju, listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey. On her fourth visit, the writer sat in Heuksadang's dog-friendly zone with a companion and her dog Uyu and ordered the ₩21,000 honeycomb bingsu, a ₩5,300 mugwort donut and a ₩6,000 iced americano. With a large free parking lot, a separate dog-friendly zone and milk-ice bingsu topped with a whole honeycomb, Heuksadang is a café worth returning to when visiting Heyri Village with a dog.

Heuksadang in Heyri Art Village is a Blue Ribbon Survey-listed bakery café known by word of mouth for its tasty handmade donuts and stylish interior. As the name hints, its unusual concept and high-quality desserts make it one of the must-visit stops on a Paju bakery tour, and it's a big café too 💛

Is parking easy at Heuksadang?

You park in the dedicated lot beside the building, and it's free no matter how long you stay. As you can see from the photos, the lot is huge and well laid out, so even on a weekend I don't think you'd need to worry about parking.

Here's the exterior of Heuksadang. There are 2 outdoor tables, but as you all know, with the heat wave warning we couldn't sit outside.. The outdoor area is nicely done though, so if you're looking for a terrace café, check the photos above 😀

What drinks and bingsu are on Heuksadang's menu?

The drink menu covers coffee (americano, latte, mocha, espresso and more), drinks like matcha latte, strawberry latte, smoothies and ades, teas like lemon, citron (yuja), Earl Grey and peppermint, and juices like orange and apple. Being a dog-friendly café, it even has a pet menu item called a "Mungpuccino", so order to your taste! Coffee can be made decaf for an extra ₩500.

In weather this hot, bingsu is a must, right? 🍨 Heuksadang doesn't only have drinks. It also has a range of bingsu made with 100% milk, so a bowl of cold bingsu after a walk around Heyri sounds perfect~ There's injeolmi (roasted soybean powder rice cake) bingsu, red bean bingsu, honeycomb bingsu and chocolate bingsu, and you can add extra red bean, so check the photos and order!! All bingsu are sized for 2 people.

Why I've visited Heuksadang in Heyri Village four times

Heuksadang's high-quality handmade cream donuts, made fresh the same day, are very popular, and maybe that's why a Blue Ribbon Survey certificate for its donuts sits inside the shop! I don't live in Paju, but Heyri has lots of dog-friendly places and the village is pretty, so I come about once a quarter, and I've been to Heuksadang four times, so I really love this café. The mood is nice, the coffee and desserts are tasty, and the fact that dogs are welcome makes me love it even more 💙 It's in the Blue Ribbon Survey, so of course I trust it!

Heuksadang's handmade donut flavors and sell-out tips

The handmade donuts come in many flavors: crème brûlée, chocolate, raspberry, Oreo, Dubai chewy, apple, coconut, sweet butter, mugwort, tiramisu, black sesame, pistachio, injeolmi and lemon. As you'd expect from a donut specialist, flavors often sell out later in the day, so if you want to try a variety, I recommend arriving a bit early!

Unlike ordinary factory-style donut shops, these have a crispy outside, chewy dough and a filling packed with cream, so I think anyone who likes donuts will be satisfied.

Heuksadang also has separate donut packaging boxes, so they'd make good gifts or takeout! If you like donuts, try packing up a few different flavors~💕

Heuksadang's first floor and separate dog-friendly zone

Heuksadang uses a standalone 2-floor building. The white-and-wood interior with black snake ornaments as accents gives it a mood that's unique yet refined.

This is the first floor as soon as you walk in. The open kitchen, the long bakery display, big windows letting in light and high ceilings make it feel airy, and the tables aren't packed close together, so it seemed good for chatting or reading without feeling cramped!

Where do you sit at Heuksadang with a dog?

Heuksadang has a separate dog-friendly zone, so people visiting with dogs can relax without feeling self-conscious! This time too I came with my boyfriend and Useu (Milk), and having a separate dog zone really made it easier to eat.. I love it whenever I come 💘

If you're visiting with a pet, please read the usage guide in the shop :) The dog-friendly zone also has its own men's and women's restrooms, so keep that in mind 😀

What are the second-floor seats at Heuksadang like?

Now we should check out the second floor, right?

Way up to the second floor of Heuksadang
Heuksadang second-floor seating

Like the first floor, the second floor has floor-to-ceiling windows along the walls for an open feel, and it seems popular for the relaxed view of Heyri outside. With 2-person tables, 4-person tables and group seating, it seemed good for dates, family, friends and group gatherings like company dinners.

Both floors have a self-service bar with cold water and napkins, and there are baby chairs too, so people visiting with a baby can come without worry.

Upstairs there's a big black snake logo on the wall, so I looked it up: the snake coiled in a circle is reminiscent of Heuksadang's signature round, plump cream donut, and it's said to be the key icon that completes the café's original, trendy interior ✨

The buzzer I got after ordering drinks! When it buzzes, pick up your order at the counter, and put the buzzer back at the return spot :)

What I ordered at Heuksadang this time, with prices

  • Mugwort donut ₩5,300
  • Iced americano ₩6,000
  • Honeycomb bingsu ₩21,000

How does Heuksadang's honeycomb bingsu (₩21,000) taste?

Heuksadang's honeycomb bingsu is a ₩21,000 bowl of 100% milk ice topped with a whole honeycomb, blueberries and granola. I've eaten plenty of red bean and injeolmi bingsu, but never one with a whole honeycomb on top, so I ordered it out of curiosity 🍯

Heuksadang honeycomb bingsu

The snowflake-style milk ice, made with 100% milk, melts in your mouth, and it was so soft and sweet that it felt like the best milk ice I've ever had. I think it would be really good even without toppings 💛 (It seemed like milk and condensed milk frozen together.)

Milk snow ice of Heuksadang's honeycomb bingsu

Is that honeycomb topping for real? There was plenty of honeycomb, not stingy at all, and I'd never seen one this big, so I was amazed and excited before even eating~ Instead of the artificial sweetness of regular honey, the sticky, rich sweetness unique to natural honeycomb spread through my mouth, and with all that sweet honey it was perfect for a sugar recharge in hot weather!! The look alone gets a 👍💛

Heuksadang bingsu topped with honeycomb

The combination of deep, refined sweetness and softness was impressive, and the blueberries and granola on top added chewiness and a sweet-tart note to bingsu that could otherwise be too soft and plain! You get the nuttiness of the milk ice, the freshness of blueberries, the rich sweetness of honeycomb and the crunch of granola all together. The honeycomb bingsu is a special menu item you can only have at Heuksadang, so if you want a special bingsu, I recommend it❣

Does Heuksadang's iced americano (₩6,000) go with dessert?

Heuksadang's iced americano is a ₩6,000 coffee with more nuttiness and chocolate notes than acidity, and it cleansed the sweetness of the donut and bingsu nicely. After a sugar recharge with the honeycomb bingsu, you have to tidy up your mouth with a hefty, nutty iced americano, right? It finished clean with no burnt taste~~💛

A weighty yet well-balanced iced americano that was really good with dessert ☕

Is Heuksadang's mugwort donut (₩5,300) very sweet?

Heuksadang's mugwort donut is ₩5,300, and even though it's a donut it isn't very sweet, so I could enjoy it to the end without getting sick of it. I was enjoying it so much that I didn't take a photo, but the subtle, slightly bitter mugwort aroma blended softly with the sweet cream, and the combination of chewy dough and smooth, not-greasy cream was really impressive.

Is Heuksadang worth a return visit with your dog?

Heuksadang, the Paju Heyri café that amazes me every time I visit! The mood is nice, dogs are welcome, and it sells a variety of drinks and desserts, so if you go to Heyri, recharge your sugar and heal at Heuksadang~😘

🐶: Sis, I loved it too, woof 💕
