Today I visited Jangpro Hanwoo Galbitsal (장프로한우갈빗살) in Hwanggeum-dong, Daegu, a place where you can enjoy proper hanwoo (Korean beef) at a reasonable price.

A lot of people are hunting for a good hanwoo place these days, and Jangpro only serves 100% native Korean beef (nurungso), so my expectations were high. It actually beat them! I'd recommend it for family meals and also for company dinners and gatherings in Suseong, so let me introduce it.

What does Jangpro Hanwoo Galbitsal look like from outside?
With its big sign and wide glass front, Jangpro stands out right away on Deuran-ro in Hwanggeum-dong. The sign and the glass windows were the first things I noticed when I arrived.

Just like the name (Jangpro Hanwoo Galbitsal), it clearly feels like a hanwoo specialist, and the shop is clean, so the first impression was good. There's also a big notice in the window about a special price on hanwoo sirloin, the kind of thing that makes you want to pop in when you walk past.

Is it good for a company dinner in Suseong? Spacious, comfortable interior
The tables are spaced widely and there are plenty of seats, so there's room even for a big company dinner or group gathering. Stepping inside, it didn't feel stuffy at all.

Ventilation is installed at every table, so the smell of grilled meat didn't cling to us much, and it looked fine for anything from a family meal to a group gathering or a Suseong company dinner.

A place that uses only 100% native hanwoo (nurungso)
Jangpro says it serves only 100% native hanwoo (nurungso). This was also posted on the wall.

They sell hanwoo at a reasonable price, yet you can feel their confidence in the meat, and when it actually arrived the marbling was really good. I think that's probably why it's steadily loved by people looking for hanwoo in Suseong, Daegu.

What's at the self-serve bar?
The basic side dishes at Jangpro are all help-yourself at the self-serve bar. If you run out, you can just go grab more, which was handy.
- Lettuce and wrap greens
- Pickled onion, myeongina (wild chive pickles), water kimchi, scallion salad
- Garlic and Cheongyang chili
- A variety of sauces, including onion soy sauce, wasabi, doenjang (soybean paste) and ssamjang (wrap sauce)

I especially liked that onion soy sauce, wasabi, doenjang and ssamjang, which go so well with meat, are all there so you can eat however you like. They also run a self-serve ramen corner, which looks like a great way to finish after the meat.

Galbitsal and sirloin: hanwoo that makes you gasp just looking at it
The galbitsal (rib meat) and sirloin I ordered at Jangpro had truly artistic marbling the moment they arrived. Both had a lively bright-red color, and the fat was dense but not excessive, so you could feel the freshness just by looking.
It was such a photogenic sight that everyone gasped as soon as it hit the table.
The best bite, with charcoal aroma on top
When I put the hanwoo on the charcoal, the fat melted slowly and a rich, nutty aroma rose up.

The galbitsal had a chewy texture with the juices intact, while the sirloin melted softly in the mouth and left a rich flavor that lingered. The deep beefy smell typical of hanwoo wasn't strong but clean, so I kept reaching for more.
How should you dip hanwoo galbitsal?
At Jangpro I tried it in this order: salt, onion soy sauce, wasabi, then wraps, all to taste. I started with just a light dip in salt, and that let me taste the meat's own flavor best.

Next, dipped in onion soy sauce, the savory depth came out more, and a little wasabi on top left a clean finish without any greasiness. They went really well together.

Then a wrap with lettuce, grilled garlic, onion and ssamjang: the juices spread the more I chewed, and it was so satisfying.

Finish with hot stew and steamed rice
It's not only the meat that's good at Jangpro; the stew that came with it was great too. The rich broth was packed with meat, tofu and vegetables, perfect for ending the meal, and with steamed rice it made a hearty finish.

Verdict: is this Hwanggeum-dong hanwoo place worth a visit?
If you're looking for a good restaurant in Hwanggeum-dong, Daegu, Jangpro Hanwoo Galbitsal is worth a visit. You get 100% native hanwoo at a less burdensome price, and overall I was very satisfied with the meat quality, the charcoal aroma and the self-serve bar.

I'd recommend it for family meals, and also for anyone looking for a hanwoo place or a company dinner spot in Suseong, Daegu. If you want a proper hanwoo day, it's worth a visit.
