Hot weather always calls for a little stamina food, haha. I kept losing my appetite and found myself craving good meat. So I headed to Hyeongnim Dakgui Daemyeong-dong Gyeongdae branch (형님닭구이 대명동계대점), right in front of Keimyung University's Daemyeong campus in Nam-gu, Daegu. It's already the talk of the neighborhood for nailing both value and flavor, so I went in with big expectations haha. If you're stuck choosing a place for a company dinner or family gathering, this one fits perfectly, so I'll give you my honest, very detailed review. ^-^

Is Hyeongnim Dakgui good for group dinners and family meals?
Yes. The place is big and the tables are spaced generously, so it's comfortable for both company dinners and family meals. The moment I walked in I was surprised by how huge it is. With so much room between tables, you can eat without worrying about the people next to you!

There are also private rooms that can fit group dinners or small gatherings, so I think it's a great spot for a company outing too.

Watching Daegu FC on the big screen over Korean BBQ
Especially in football or baseball season, you can watch the game on the big screen while you eat, and the atmosphere was the best, haha. For me, meat tastes even sweeter while watching a Daegu FC match.

A kids' playroom for families
There's even a neat playroom, a must for moms with little ones, so I thought it would be hard to find a better place for a family meal.
What side dishes are at the Hyeongnim Dakgui self-bar?

The self-bar has over 20 side dishes, including wrap vegetables, homemade kimchi, seasoned greens, spicy marinated crab and soy-braised eggs. This self-bar is the restaurant's hidden charm, and I was amazed by how much care went into the variety. They also run a Korean buffet at lunch, so you can imagine the home-style cooking of the ladies in the kitchen, haha.
You can even make your own fried eggs and toast at the self-bar, so picking things before and after the meal was a lot of fun ^0^ I nearly finished a whole bowl of rice with just the side dishes before the meat arrived, lol.
Hyeongnim Dakgui menu: chicken BBQ half and full plates, plus the lunch buffet

Hyeongnim Dakgui Daemyeong-dong Gyeongdae branch has not only chicken BBQ but also beef and pork, so a group with different tastes won't have a problem. At lunch you can enjoy a Korean buffet for under ₩10,000, so I'd guess it's popular with office workers and students nearby. In the evening, chicken BBQ comes as a 600g half plate or a 1kg full plate, which makes it easy to order good value for your group size. Everything on the menu looked delicious, and even the time spent choosing made me happy! Being able to pick whatever you like is half the fun, so the menu passed with flying colors.

After ordering, I loaded up on side dishes from the self-bar and sat there politely waiting for the meat haha
How does a half-salt, half-spicy chicken BBQ plate taste?
I ordered the signature chicken BBQ as a half plate, half salt flavor and half spicy marinade. It comes pre-grilled, so it's easy to cook, and it was really tender with no gamey smell.

Salt-grilled chicken: light and juicy
I tried the salt-grilled one first, and it was light and bursting with juice, practically melting in my mouth!

It's sprinkled with a special seasoning, so it's pleasantly salty even on its own, and dipping it generously in the sauce made it twice as nutty.

Spicy marinated chicken: sweet-spicy sauce and charcoal aroma
The marinated one had a sweet and spicy sauce that blended with the charcoal aroma, and the savory flavor just exploded! Flipping it often left the outside slightly crisp and the inside moist, and I couldn't put my chopsticks down! haha

The owner showed us in detail how to grill it, and the hygienic disposable grill plate kept the meal clean and pleasant right to the end.

Hyeongnim Dakgui pork ribs at ₩7,900 a serving: how do they taste?

The pork ribs are ₩7,900 per serving, and they say they use only 100% rib cut, not neck-shoulder cut. I loved the chicken BBQ, but I couldn't ignore the sweet rib smell drifting from the next table. After some agonizing, I ordered the pork ribs too, lol.

The price is hard to believe, and hearing it was 100% rib cut made me even more excited. The meat was visibly thick and the marinade had soaked in deep, so my mouth was watering before it even hit the grill.
It turned golden brown over the charcoal, and the moment I put a piece in my mouth I was amazed by the tender texture that melts away.

The marinade isn't overpowering or too sweet, so you never get tired of it and keep reaching for more. I thought this was just a chicken BBQ place, but Hyeongnim Dakgui's ribs are officially the best ribs of my life! Even though I was already fairly full, the ribs made me order another bowl of rice. The value is perfect too, which honestly moved me ^-^
Finishing with ice cream from the self-bar

Finally, I helped myself to the ice cream at the Hyeongnim Dakgui self-bar, and it made for a truly perfect meal.

If you're looking for a good-value, clean meat restaurant near Daemyeong-dong in Daegu, definitely stop by Hyeongnim Dakgui. Company dinner, gathering or family meal, it'll work out perfectly.

Hyeongnim Dakgui events and promotions
They're also running an event where following Hyeongnim Dakgui's Instagram gets you a free soju or beer, so don't miss it! haha They're reportedly planning several events for the recent North American World Cup too, so if you visit during the tournament, check out the events!
I'm planning to go back soon and eat all the pork ribs I can. How about some delicious meat tonight, everyone? ^-^ I highly recommend Hyeongnim Dakgui! haha
