The European Haenggung Main Branch (더유로피언 행궁본점) is an oak wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta restaurant at the entrance to the craft workshop street in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, right in front of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. On a date at the weekend lunch peak, the writer ordered the beef ragù pasta (₩22,000) and the signature arugula jamón burrata cheese pizza (₩31,000): the food came out quickly, the ragù was not salty, and the pizza dough was delicious even on its own. The European is a good stop for a date meal after exploring Haenggung-dong.

Suwon retro chicken spot, stone-plate corn cheese: Haenggung Jangjak

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak wood-fired herbal whole chicken restaurant in Haenggung-dong, Suwon, right in front of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. During the Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival, the writer dropped in late one evening, sat in the retro indoor seating and ordered the corn cheese gratin seasoned wood-fired chicken (₩27,000) with Kirin draft beer. The stone plate kept the chicken hot to the last bite while the sticky rice stuffing turned into nurungji (crispy scorched rice), making Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak an old-style chicken spot worth trying for anyone who only thinks of galbi chicken in Suwon.

Gojan-dong date pub in Ansan: 90s hits and grilled jeyuk, Samsigi-ne

Samsigi-ne Jungang Gojan is a Korean pub in Gojan-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan, built around three signature dishes: fire-grilled jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), garlic chicken and CEO jeon (shrimp and squid pancake). On a Saturday night, two of us shared the 54,000-won Samsigi set with 6,000-won Okinawa Orion draft beer, and the late-90s dance hits and ballads put us in such a good mood that we headed to karaoke afterward. With smoky fire-grilled pork and a relaxed atmosphere, Samsigi-ne Jungang Gojan is a solid Gojan-dong pick for couples and after-work drinks.

Ansan Italian restaurant with pepperoni pizza: Two Find Peter Gojan

Two Find Peter Ansan Gojan is a casual Italian dining restaurant on Gwangdeok 2-ro in Gojan-dong, Ansan, Gyeonggi. On a weekend date the writer ordered spicy crab pasta (₩16,000), green salsa chicken salad (₩12,000) and pepperoni pizza (₩20,000), and liked the heat of the rosé sauce and the pizza that was not too salty. There is no parking on site, so a nearby paid lot is needed, and there can be a wait on weekends and anniversaries — otherwise, Two Find Peter Ansan Gojan is a definite repeat visit.
