Dongtan offal hot pot restaurant: gopchang-daechang stew at Horangigul

In short

Horangigul, Lotte Department Store Dongtan is a gopchang (beef small intestine) and daechang (beef large intestine) hot pot restaurant on the B1 level of Lotte Department Store Dongtan, which connects directly to Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Across several repeat visits, the writer always ordered the same gopchang + daechang hot pot (19,500 won per serving) for two with bowls of rice, and the broth, packed with vegetables, gopchang and daechang, grew richer the longer it simmered. Horangigul is a good choice on days you crave a spicy broth, simmered well and eaten with rice.

Horangigul is a place I keep coming back to among Dongtan Lotte Department Store restaurants whenever I want a thick, spicy broth. This time too, I didn't even hesitate — I went straight for the gopchang+daechang stew for two, so I could taste both large and small intestine together.

I've already visited Horangigul several times. Even when I think about trying something else, once I'm here I end up thinking of the gopchang+daechang stew anyway.

What's the vibe like inside?

Horangigul's interior doesn't feel like a typical department store restaurant — it leans a bit toward a Japanese izakaya vibe. Dark wood tones, warm lighting, and walls decorated with Japanese-lettered menu boards and traditional decor give this small space a real sense of atmosphere.

Besides the stews, there are also grilled daechang/gopchang set meals, the original gyudon set, charcoal-grilled butadon set, katsudon set, and you can add noodles or risotto too.

Gopchang and daechang stew for two — packed with vegetables from the start

The moment the gopchang and daechang stew for two arrives, it looks seriously generous. On top of the tofu, fried tofu, and chives, it's also loaded with bean sprouts, mung bean sprouts, alba cabbage, green onion, and onion.

According to the signage in the restaurant, one serving of stew contains 210g of vegetables alone. Considering a typical salad serving has around 100–120g of vegetables, that's actually a lot more than I expected. At first, the fried tofu and tofu sit chunky on top, with the gopchang, daechang, and vegetables hiding underneath.

Once you let it simmer thoroughly, the vegetables wilt down and the broth gets richer and richer.

Yeah, the broth here really is that good

The reason I keep ordering the same stew every time I come here is honestly this broth. It's spicy without being just plain hot — the savory flavor from the daechang and gopchang mixes into the soup, and the longer it simmers, the richer and heavier it gets.

Yuja soy sauce, savory sauce, and garlic scape pickles

Horangigul comes with two sauces as standard — a yuzu (citron) soy sauce and a savory sauce. When the stew first arrives, I dip the tofu, fried tofu, and vegetables in the yuzu soy sauce, and once the gopchang and daechang are well cooked, I dip them in whichever sauce I feel like — it tastes totally different from eating the stew plain. Dipping the broth-soaked fried tofu in the savory sauce is a special treat too! The garlic scape pickles that come alongside were also great — sour, salty, and crunchy, they clean your palate after each rich, fatty bite of daechang, so I kept reaching for them without thinking.

The daechang especially has that satisfying pop of savory fat on the inside, and the gopchang soaks up plenty of broth too, making it delicious. Add in the crunchy bean sprouts and mung bean sprouts, plus the softly cooked tofu and fried tofu, and there's honestly way more in the pot than you'd expect.

Rice instead of noodles or risotto — how was it?

This time, instead of noodles or risotto, I ordered a bowl of rice to eat with the broth. And it went perfectly. A spoonful of that thick, spicy stew broth with a bite of plain white rice is exactly the kind of flavor Koreans love, haha. Honestly, the broth itself is so good on its own that I'd really recommend eating it with rice.

A place I keep coming back to no matter how many times I've eaten here

Being inside Lotte Department Store makes Horangigul easy to reach, and ordering just one stew already comes packed with vegetables, gopchang, and daechang, making for a satisfying, filling meal. Above all, the fact that I keep ordering the gopchang+daechang stew every single visit tells me my order here is basically set in stone. The broth tastes much better once you let it simmer longer than you think, so wait a bit and enjoy it rich and thick. If you're craving a spicy, hearty broth dish among Dongtan Lotte Department Store restaurants, I recommend Horangigul's gopchang+daechang stew with a bowl of rice on the side.
