Upper and Under (어퍼앤언더) is a large dessert café spread over several floors near Sinnonhyeon Station. I was looking for a nice café around Gangnam and ended up here. When I look for a café around Sinnonhyeon Station, I care a lot about a spacious, quiet space, and Upper and Under scored very high on the space, the desserts and the atmosphere. If you want a Sinnonhyeon café that's good for working or for a date, I recommend it!!

Upper and Under is close to Sinnonhyeon Station, so access was great. It was easy to find and easy to meet friends in Gangnam. It's a big café running from the first floor up to the third, and I was surprised by how large it was the moment I walked in. Gangnam cafés are often so crowded that finding a seat is hard, but Upper and Under has a variety of seating, so you can relax.

Upper and Under has a really wide range of desserts, from baked goods to cakes. With so many choices, dessert lovers will probably be very happy here.

I hear the canelé (small caramelized French pastry) and financier (almond butter cake) are the popular items, but this time I ordered an Americano, an Einspänner, a yangzhi ganlu cake and an Earl Grey canelé.

Interior: is it good for working or dates?

I loved the interior: white overall, with nature that becomes a picture. Soft lighting and neatly arranged tables made it feel cozy, and each floor is spread out and separated, so nothing felt stuffy. Plenty of people were working on laptops and plenty of couples were there too, so it clearly seems like a popular Sinnonhyeon café for dates and work.

Taste and price of each item at Upper and Under

Popular Einspänner, ₩8,000

The Einspänner (coffee topped with cream) is ₩8,000 and was my personal favorite. The cream was very smooth and sweet, and it blended beautifully with the coffee underneath. It wasn't too sweet and the nutty richness really came through, so I immediately understood why it's a popular item.

Americano, ₩6,500

The Americano is ₩6,500, with low acidity and a clean, smooth style overall. It was easy to drink and a perfectly balanced match for sweet desserts.

Earl Grey canelé, ₩4,500

The Earl Grey canelé is ₩4,500, with the classic texture: crisp outside, moist inside. The Earl Grey aroma comes up subtly, which was totally my taste! The flavor was much better than a plain canelé, and I thought this place really knows its baked goods.

Yangzhi ganlu cake, ₩8,500

The yangzhi ganlu cake (mango-pomelo-grapefruit dessert flavor) is ₩8,500. It's not something you see often, so I was curious and ordered it, and it beat my expectations. The cake was soft, the sweetness not overdone, and the balance good overall. It went well with coffee and looked pretty too, so I was happy with it.
