Keimyung ramen shop, Daegu: 10-min lunch between classes, Myeonsikdang

Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch (면식당 계명대점) is a Japanese restaurant serving ramen, soba, katsu and rice bowls on the 2nd floor of a building near Keimyung University's east gate in Dalseo, Daegu. For a set for two, the writer ordered mala shabu rice noodle soup, tonkotsu ramen, mozzarella cheese katsu, fillet katsu and a green grape ade, and the food arrived in about 10 minutes. For Keimyung students squeezed for time between classes, Myeonsikdang Keimyung University Branch delivers both flavor and speed.

Sushi spot near Dasa Station, Daegu: jumbo raw shrimp sushi, Mummum

Mummum Dasa Branch (뭄뭄 다사점) is a sushi and Japanese restaurant in Dasa-eup, Dalseong, Daegu, right next to Dasa Catholic Church. On a weekend evening, the writer, a devoted salmon lover, ordered the salmon sushi platter, the half-and-half sushi (salmon and raw shrimp) and a beef udon, and was most surprised by the size of the raw shrimp on the half-and-half plate, ordered for the first time. The kelp-cured salmon sushi is good, but the raw shrimp on the half-and-half sushi at Mummum Dasa Branch is a must-try.

No-wait Saturday lunch shabu-shabu buffet in Ulsan: Shabre Garden

Shabre Garden Ulsan Nam-gu Branch (Shabre Garden The Black) is an all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu, sushi and hotel-dining buffet on the 2nd floor of the Suam Market Raw Fish Center medical building in Nam-gu, Ulsan. On a Saturday lunch the writer walked into Shabre Garden with no wait and enjoyed half-and-half broth shabu-shabu, 50-plus buffet dishes, salmon sushi from the sushi zone and chocolate fondue for dessert, and the quality of the salmon was a real surprise. For shabu-shabu and salmon sushi in one meal in Ulsan, Shabre Garden Ulsan Nam-gu Branch is a good choice.

Daegu Korean restaurant even mushroom-haters clear: Hyangtaek Jongno

Hyangtaek Daegu Jongno Branch (향택) is a hanok-style Korean restaurant a 5-minute walk from Banwoldang Station in Jung-gu, Daegu, directly across from the Starbucks Jongno Gotaek branch. On a weekday at 2 p.m. there was no wait, and two of us ordered mackerel gondre rice and yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef over rice) at 14,000 won each — the mushrooms went down easily even for someone who avoids them, and the mackerel was served completely boneless. Wrapped in gopchang gim (thick roasted seaweed) with seasoned salted seafood on the side, Hyangtaek makes a neat, filling meal.

Weekend noon beef tripe restaurant in Nampo-dong, Busan: Bupyeong Yang

Bupyeong Yang Gopchang is a yang gopchang (grilled beef tripe and intestine) restaurant in the Bupyeong-dong jokbal alley by the entrance to Kkangtong Market in Nampo-dong, Jung-gu, Busan. Two of us visited at noon on a weekend in early September and ordered the stone-pan seasoned tripe in the medium size with a 2,000-won glass noodle add-on, and it was so much food that the fried rice went untouched. For two people the small size is enough, and the outdoor tented seats at Bupyeong Yang Gopchang look better suited to evening drinks.
