Seogyo-dong gomtang lunch with ginseng honey and mini yukhoe: Baengni
In short
Baengni Gomtang is a Korean restaurant in Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, near Hongdae, specializing in hanwoo gomtang (Korean beef bone soup). For lunch, the writer ordered hanwoo gomtang with sprout ginseng and honey and mini yukhoe (Korean beef tartare); the non-greasy broth and sides that didn't overlap made for a full, well-rounded meal. For a clean, mild Korean lunch in Hongdae, Baengni Gomtang is a good choice.

Looking for somewhere clean to grab a proper meal around Hongdae and Seogyo-dong, I went for lunch at Baengni Gomtang, a gomtang (beef bone soup) restaurant in Seogyo-dong. Gomtang is a familiar dish, but the vibe and composition can vary a lot from place to place — Baengni Gomtang built its meal around hanwoo gomtang while also letting you enjoy sprout ginseng and mini yukhoe, so the whole spread felt really full.
Where is Baengni Gomtang and what does it look like from outside?

Baengni Gomtang sits on Wausan-ro 29-gil in Seogyo-dong, in a spot that's well suited for lunch. Hongdae tends to be full of cafés, Western food, and Japanese food, so a gomtang spot serving warm broth and rice stood out in the mix. The exterior overall felt clean and tidy, with the fresh, crisp impression you'd expect from a newly opened restaurant. The sign and entrance weren't complicated either, so it was easy to find even on a first visit, and the atmosphere didn't feel intimidating whether you're eating solo or stopping by for an office lunch.
What's the interior like — is it okay for solo dining?

Stepping inside, Baengni Gomtang felt clean and neat rather than having that heavy, old-school gomtang-shop feel. The layout was set up so you could focus on your meal, which made it seem good for a quick lunch-hour bite. Tables and the space overall were well organized, with the crisp feel typical of a new restaurant. Soup restaurants can easily end up feeling heavy or dated, but Baengni Gomtang was relatively bright and clean, making it comfortable for younger diners or anyone visiting Hongdae. It suited both solo dining and meals for two, and there was even some fun in looking around the space while waiting for the food.
I ordered hanwoo gomtang, sprout ginseng with honey, and mini yukhoe

How's the hanwoo gomtang?
The first thing I ordered was Baengni Gomtang's signature hanwoo gomtang. Everything from the broth to the meat felt clean overall. With gomtang, it's the depth of the broth itself that matters more than any strong seasoning, and this one filled me up warmly without ever feeling greasy. The hanwoo inside blended well with the broth, and eating it with rice made for a filling lunch. It was especially good for a day when nothing too intense sounds appealing, even in an area like Hongdae with so many food options. It's the kind of dish you'd naturally crave on a day you want something clean and comforting.

Is the mini yukhoe worth adding as a side?
Mini yukhoe was a good side to eat alongside the hanwoo gomtang. The gomtang alone is filling enough at Baengni Gomtang, but if you want a bit more meat, adding mini yukhoe was a nice move. True to its name, the portion wasn't overwhelming, making it just right to pair with the soup, and the soft texture of the raw beef contrasted nicely with the warm gomtang. Since the flavors of the main dish and the side didn't overlap, it was fun to alternate between the two, and it worked well when you want to make lunch feel a bit more substantial. Since the portion isn't large, it's especially suited to anyone who wants to try a few different things.

What does the sprout ginseng and honey combo taste like?
The sprout ginseng and honey combination was interesting since it's not something you often see at a typical gomtang restaurant. Having a side like this to enjoy alongside the soup, rather than just a bowl of gomtang on its own, made the meal at Baengni Gomtang feel a bit more special. Sprout ginseng has its own distinct aroma and slight bitterness, and adding honey's sweetness balanced it out better than expected. Ginseng's flavor can be polarizing when it's too strong, but paired with honey it felt lighter, almost like a clean dessert. It worked well either before the gomtang or as something to eat alongside it partway through the meal, and it was memorable as a distinctly Korean pairing.
Verdict: for a clean Korean lunch in Seogyo-dong, Hongdae
Baengni Gomtang was a good place to visit when you want a warm, clean Korean meal near Hongdae. Building the meal around hanwoo gomtang while also having sprout ginseng with honey and mini yukhoe kept things from feeling monotonous and made for a fairly full spread. Being a soup-based meal, it also sat easy on the stomach, and it wasn't too heavy for a lunch dish either. If you're looking to step away from Hongdae's café- and Western-food-heavy dining scene for something clean and Korean, Baengni Gomtang in Seogyo-dong could be a solid choice.
