JB Coffee in Danyang-eup is a café where you can enjoy garlic, the thing Danyang is known for, as a playfully shaped dessert. On a Danyang trip I wanted to visit at least one café and try a dessert with some local character, and JB Coffee was a memorable place in that sense.

What are the second floor and terrace at JB Coffee like?

JB Coffee isn't just a first-floor café. There's a second floor too, with all kinds of figures and display cases packed with sneakers to look at. Waiting for our order never got boring.

Besides the indoor seating, there's a terrace where you can look out at the scenery. The wooden deck and the string lights hung here and there make it a nice spot for a short break on a trip.

What is Maneul-injul-alatdanyang dessert?

We ordered the melon and strawberry versions of "Maneul-injul-alatdanyang" (a witty name meaning "I thought it was garlic, Danyang"), plus a passion fruit ade. My first thought when it arrived was that they had really nailed the local specialty.

A green and a pink whole-garlic-shaped dessert come in clear glasses, and the colors alone are pretty. Each clove's rounded shape, the tip gathering at the top and even the fine lines on the surface are reproduced, so it's great for photos and you'll instantly remember this dessert from your Danyang trip.

When you look at photos of a dessert from a trip later, it's nice if they bring the place back, right? The shape of this dessert itself carries Danyang's character, and I liked that about it.

Melon and strawberry flavors: what changes when you pour coffee on?

The melon version had a lovely sweet melon aroma that spreads in your mouth. The cool texture and soft sweetness made it fun to eat spoonful by spoonful, and the pretty light green color matched the flavor.

The strawberry version had that sweet-tart strawberry flavor, different from the melon. It melted in the mouth, sweetness spreading with a fresh tang on top, so it was a pleasure to eat. If the melon was fragrant and gently sweet, the strawberry felt a bit brighter, and alternating between them was fun.

It was also fun that the taste changes when you pour over the coffee that comes with it. The bitterness and deep aroma of the coffee on the sweet dessert made it taste richer. We enjoyed each flavor first, then added coffee little by little, and being able to adjust to your own taste was nice.

The garlic-shaped chocolate inside

The garlic-shaped chocolate inside the dessert was so detailed it was a shame to just pass over it. The creamy white color and the plump shape with a slightly pointed tip look just like a peeled garlic clove, so looking at it you'd almost think real garlic had been put in the dessert.

In your mouth it's sweet chocolate, so the gap between what your eyes expect and the actual taste was fun too. Tying even a small detail like this to the garlic theme suits the menu name and makes it stick in your memory.

How does the passion fruit ade at JB Coffee taste?

The passion fruit ade we ordered with it was a good drink to have between bites of the sweet garlic dessert. I stirred it so the pulp and seeds gathered at the bottom of the cup mixed in, and the tangy taste and aroma of passion fruit spread, with fizzy bubbles making it refreshing. I enjoyed it so much.

With sweetness and acidity together, it freshened up my mouth, and the seeds you bite into here and there add to the fun of drinking it. A tangy, tasty drink~~

Sambong bingsu that looks like Dodamsambong

We didn't order the Sambong bingsu (shaved ice) at JB Coffee, but another customer did and it really caught my eye. It looked just like the photo on the menu, so I couldn't help staring.

Green and pink peaks rising around a yellow center were striking, and with a little Jeongja (pavilion) decoration between them, it looked like Dodamsambong turned into a dessert.

Why I recommend JB Coffee on a Danyang trip

The garlic-shaped dessert I had at JB Coffee tasted as good as its unusual look, so I'd recommend it to anyone in Danyang looking for something different. I was impressed that a local specialty and landmark can be turned into such friendly, pretty desserts, and with the fun of taking photos plus the cool, sweet taste, I think it could make a lovely break on a trip.
