Cave-themed Korean BBQ in Gangnam with kimchi jjigae for two: Sansol

In short

Sansol Sinnonhyeon is an aged-pork Korean BBQ restaurant a short walk from Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Two of us ordered two servings of samgyeopsal (pork belly), kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and a bowl of rice, and the staff grilled the meat at the table so every piece was eaten at its best moment. With an interior built to look like huge boulders and a cave, Sansol Sinnonhyeon works just as well for a date as for a group dinner.

I wanted proper pork belly near Sinnonhyeon Station, so I headed to Sansol Sinnonhyeon (산솔 신논현점). This time I went with one other person, and we ordered two servings of pork belly, kimchi jjigae, and rice to eat a really filling meal. The taste of the meat, the unique atmosphere, and the friendly service all added up to a high level of satisfaction overall. I'm writing this detailed review for anyone looking for good pork belly near Sinnonhyeon.

Where Sansol Sinnonhyeon is and what the cave-themed interior looks like

Sansol Sinnonhyeon is located at 15 Gangnam-daero 112-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the ground floor. It's a comfortable walking distance from Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station, so getting there by public transit was easy. The location also works well if you have a date or a meetup somewhere around Gangnam or Sinnonhyeon.

The first thing that caught my eye walking in was, of course, the interior. It's decorated with an atmosphere clearly different from a typical Korean BBQ restaurant — a space reminiscent of massive rocks and a cave, which was quite striking. It felt like a lot of thought went into the mood even though it's a BBQ place, so it suited a date well too.

The whole space was kept clean, and the seats were comfortable enough to eat at a relaxed pace. I also liked that the smoke and smell weren't overly noticeable while we ate. Search for good pork belly near Sinnonhyeon and tons of BBQ places come up, but a spot with this much character in the space itself feels rare.

Tableside grilling: staff cook the pork for you

At Sansol Sinnonhyeon, staff grill the meat for you directly. From the moment we were shown to our table the service was friendly, and throughout the meal they kept checking in on what we needed, which made the whole meal much more comfortable.

Even with the same cut of meat, the taste changes a lot depending on how well it's grilled. At Sansol Sinnonhyeon, the staff watch the meat and grill it just right, so we got to chat and relax while waiting, then eat it exactly when it was at its best. This kind of service really shines for a date or a group gathering.

The basic side dishes that came out were also pretty varied. It wasn't just lettuce and garlic — there were several kinds of banchan (side dishes) prepared to pair one by one with the meat, which I liked. Enjoying the meat on its own first and then mixing in the different sides afterward meant we didn't get tired of it even through two servings of pork belly.

How were the two servings of pork belly at Sansol Sinnonhyeon?

Then the pork belly we'd been waiting for arrived. The moment I saw the thick cuts, I felt like I'd come to the right place. The ratio of lean meat to fat looked great, and the staff carefully grilled each piece on the grill for us.

As the pork belly cooked on the grill, a savory aroma rose up that really stirred the appetite. It was grilled so the surface turned golden brown while the juices stayed inside, so it looked delicious even before we ate it. If I had to pick the single most satisfying part of Sansol Sinnonhyeon, it would be the taste of the pork belly combined with the tableside grilling service.

Taking a bite of the well-grilled pork belly, the outside was nicely browned and savory while the inside stayed moist. The thickness meant you really felt the juices and the pork's distinct flavor when chewing, and the fatty parts were savory too, giving it good balance. In the search for good pork belly near Sinnonhyeon, what matters most in the end is the taste of the meat itself, and I felt the fundamentals here were quite solid.

For the first few pieces I skipped the side dishes and just tasted the meat on its own. After that I combined it one by one with the prepared sauces and various sides, and the same pork belly felt different depending on the combination, which made it fun to eat.

Why we added kimchi jjigae and a bowl of rice

The thick pork belly in particular paired really well with a bowl of rice. The combination of savory meat and warm rice is hard to go wrong with, isn't it. Sansol Sinnonhyeon is a place a lot of people say even the rice is delicious, and putting a piece of meat on top of the rice really was hearty and satisfying.

After eating a good amount of pork belly, we also had the kimchi jjigae. When eating pork belly at a BBQ restaurant, the combo of kimchi jjigae and rice is hard to skip, and I was glad we ordered it that day too.

The kimchi jjigae had the deep flavor of kimchi fully soaked into the broth, and it was spicy and refreshing. Eating pork belly can leave you feeling a bit greasy after a while, but a spoonful of the hot kimchi jjigae brought the appetite right back.

Dipping the rice slightly in the kimchi jjigae broth and pairing it with a piece of pork belly was also great. Compared to ordering just meat, it felt like a much heartier meal. If you're looking for good pork belly near Sinnonhyeon and visit Sansol, I'd recommend ordering the kimchi jjigae and rice along with it.

Is Sansol Sinnonhyeon good for a date or a group dinner?

The atmosphere was also to my liking. Rather than the typical BBQ restaurant interior, the unique cave-like concept left an impression, and the space felt pleasant. It's good for casually grabbing meat with friends, but it also seems well suited to occasions where the mood matters too, like a date or a gathering with coworkers.

Sansol Sinnonhyeon felt less like a place that's only good for the meat and more like a BBQ restaurant that put equal care into the space and the service. The staff were friendly and grilled the meat for us directly, which made things much more comfortable as a diner, and the advantage of eating the meat right when it's at its best was clear.

This was my first visit to Sansol Sinnonhyeon, but overall I was satisfied enough that I'd want to come back. Next time I'd like to visit with a larger group and try other aged pork cuts besides the pork belly.

We got to enjoy delicious pork belly, kimchi jjigae, and rice for a hearty meal, and thanks to the friendly staff and the easy tableside grilling service, it was a pleasant meal from start to finish.
