Dangsan Station bakery new bakes: mango wakppu, pineapple bun, BYWAY

In short

BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is a bakery café in Dangsan-dong, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, near Exit 1 of Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station, baking dozens of breads fresh every day. The writer took out three new items to share with an acquaintance: the fresh mango wakppu salt bread, a Hong Kong pineapple bun served with pineapple jam on the side, and Shanghai injeolmi butter tteok (butter rice cake with roasted soybean powder). Even with new items the writer doesn't usually order, every pick from BYWAY BAKERS was delicious.

Fresh bread baked every morning! A Dangsan-dong bakery full of drinks and desserts: BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch

BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch is a Dangsan-dong bakery that bakes well over a dozen kinds of bread by hand every single day. With its stylish, European-bakery-like interior and a case full of desserts, I had a really happy tea time here.

What's the atmosphere like?

The space is quite large, yet it was almost full of people there for bread. The whole front is windows and the shop is spacious, but the warm wood finish makes it feel cozy and warm.

What breads and desserts does BYWAY BAKERS have?

From simple breads that work as a meal to sweet dessert breads, you can enjoy everything from lunch to tea time. There are so many breads and desserts I wanted that I honestly didn't know what to eat.

There's a wide variety of financiers too, which are best with coffee. The sandwiches are packed with filling, so one of those plus a latte seems like a full meal.

Salt bread is my favorite, and even that comes in plenty of combinations: plain salt bread, ham and cheese, egg, mocha and more.

The whipped cream cake packed with mango is so pretty too. There are whole cakes for anniversaries, and slice cakes in many varieties. And a rich egg tart is simply the best tea snack!

If you go to BYWAY BAKERS, please have the Hong Kong pineapple bun. I saw it for the first time today, and it was so good I wanted to run off to Hong Kong right away.

Takeout of mostly new items, to share with an acquaintance

I packed up a bit of everything and headed off to eat with an acquaintance! Today I filled the bag with breads I hadn't tried before. The BYWAY BAKERS boxes are really pretty too, so they'd work well as a housewarming gift.

Fresh mango wakppu salt bread: how much mango is in it?

The wakppu salt bread is a new item at BYWAY BAKERS: savory salt bread topped with fresh mango, mango jam, yogurt cream, white chocolate and mango jelly. I've eaten a lot of salt bread, but this one!! It's a truly unique, delicious salt bread I've never had anywhere else.

Honestly, with that thick white chocolate on top, I thought it might be too much. But the moment I split it in half, I was stunned by how much mango was inside. It's not just a few mango bits for aroma. It's packed as if nearly half a mango went in.

Take a big bite together with the salt bread. Mango juice bursting out, refreshing yogurt cream and moist, buttery salt bread dance around in your mouth. I didn't expect that much, but the mango was so sweet and fragrant that I really enjoyed it.

Hong Kong pineapple bun: isn't there too much butter?

The Hong Kong pineapple bun looks buttery, but it wasn't greasy at all. The outside is crisp and slightly salty, the inside is super moist with buttery aroma all through it! Add the sweet, tangy pineapple jam on top! It was a fresh flavor combination I'd never had before.

Serving the pineapple jam separately is a stroke of genius! You can spread as much as you like, which I loved. So this is why people go to Hong Kong for desserts!

What does the Shanghai injeolmi butter tteok taste like?

The Shanghai injeolmi butter tteok (butter rice cake coated in roasted soybean powder) is covered in nutty soybean powder, and I tried it for the first time today. So this is how good butter tteok can be! It has the chewiness of a sticky rice cake with rich butter aroma, plus nutty soybean powder on top! Good plus good makes one happy bite.

Overall verdict on a new-items-only order

I'm someone who mostly sticks to what I already eat. Today I trusted BYWAY BAKERS Yeongdeungpo Branch and ordered mostly new items I wouldn't normally pick, and I enjoyed them all. The salt bread loaded with mango, the super chewy butter tteok and the Hong Kong dessert were all so sweet and delicious.
