Yangsan bakery café: Stamp Tour coupon bread & grain latte, Sunji Café

Sunji Café (순지카페) is a large bakery café near Tongdosa IC in Habuk-myeon, Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do. After eating at a restaurant on the same grounds, the writer had a white roll, a grain latte and a salted caramel gelato latte at Sunji Café, got 10% off with the meal receipt, and took bread home using a 10,000 won Yangsan Stamp Tour coupon. Sunji Café is a handy stop for after-meal dessert and bread to go on a Tongdosa outing.

Yangsan crab restaurant 25 min from Ulsan: grilled fish set, Deodo

Deodo Gejang (더도게장) is a Korean restaurant in Habuk-myeon, Yangsan, near Tongdosa Temple, specializing in Jeju yellow crab gejang (marinated crab) and assorted marinated seafood. On a rainy Sunday afternoon, the writer drove over from Ulsan for the 2-person set of three grilled fish, soy-marinated yellow crab and nutritious pot rice (₩48,000). The clear, gently sweet soy sauce and plump crab meat were good enough to order an extra bowl of rice just to mix with the leftover sauce. Deodo Gejang suits day-trippers from Ulsan and Busan looking for firm crab meat and clean-tasting soy crab.

Duck restaurant near Ulsan Grand Park for summer baeksuk: Tteuldamjip

Tteuldamjip (뜰담집) is a duck restaurant in Yulli, Cheongnyang-eup, Ulju, Ulsan, near Ulsan Grand Park and Munsu Stadium. Worn out by the summer heat, the writer and a friend booked a day ahead for duck baeksuk (whole duck boiled in broth), then finished with duck baeksuk porridge made with mung beans; the rich broth had no gamey smell, and the meat pulled apart at a touch of chopsticks. With a large parking lot and a cool dining room, Tteuldamjip is an easy pick for a stamina meal near Ulsan Grand Park.

Ulsan milmyeon spot, quick lunch line, vinegar-dashed noodles: Samsam

Samsam Milmyeon Main Branch (삼삼밀면 본점) is a milmyeon (wheat cold noodle) restaurant in Dal-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan, near the Ulsan intercity and express bus terminals. There was a lunchtime wait at Samsam Milmyeon, but tables turned over fast, and the meal started with warm broth and radish kimchi before mul milmyeon, bibim milmyeon and dumplings. The icy mul milmyeon with a round or two of vinegar and the moderately spicy bibim milmyeon made a satisfying summer lunch on a trip to Ulsan.

No-break-time milmyeon restaurant in Myeongchon, Ulsan: Samsam Myeonga

Samsam Myeonga (삼삼면가) is a milmyeon (cold wheat noodle) and fresh noodle restaurant next to Ujeong Church in Myeongchon, Buk-gu, Ulsan, with sets that add tonkatsu or chungmu gimbap (small seaweed rice rolls). On a weekend afternoon, two friends ordered both Set A (bibim milmyeon + tonkatsu, 13,000 won) and Set B (fresh noodles + chungmu gimbap, 12,000 won) for a generous spread. Samsam Myeonga has no break time and is a good Myeongchon lunch spot for trying several dishes at a reasonable price.

Sushi fan meets shabu fan at a Yaeum-dong, Ulsan buffet: Shabre Garden

Shabre Garden Ulsan Nam-gu Branch (샤브르정원 더블랙 울산남구점) is an all-you-can-eat shabu-shabu, sushi and hotel-style buffet restaurant in Yaeum-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan, near Suam Market. The writer, who wanted shabu-shabu, and a friend who wanted sushi walked into Shabre Garden with no wait at a late Saturday lunch (₩31,900 per adult on weekends) and had sushi, half-and-half broth shabu-shabu, rice paper wraps, side dishes, draft beer and bingsu. Nobody had to argue over the menu, so they plan to come back to Shabre Garden with family.

Ulsan rice cake shop, bite-size, less-sweet injeolmi: Baekho Tteokbang

Baekho Tteokbang (백호떡방) is a rice cake shop specialising in sweet pumpkin injeolmi (chewy rice cake), on the first floor of Geukdong Star Class in Sinjeong-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan. As a gift for their parents, the writer bought a medium Baekho-tteok (castella sweet pumpkin injeolmi) and a medium Heukho-tteok (black sesame sweet pumpkin injeolmi). The bite-size pieces make an easy snack for older people, and the parents liked that they were not sweet but mild and nutty. For a gift for parents and elders, or thank-you gifts in Ulsan, Baekho Tteokbang is a good fit.

Chuseok lunch with mom at Gijang outlet: jambon pizza to go, Bueokgan

Bueokgan Restaurant is a Western restaurant on the 1st floor of Shinsegae Simon Busan Premium Outlets in Gijang, Busan. Arriving at 12:40 pm with mom over the Chuseok holiday, the writer ordered seafood tomato pasta, pastry soup and jambon pizza, and staff warned in advance that the food could take more than 40 minutes. The pizza ended up packed to go because the restaurant was so busy, but the mild tomato sauce and sweet pumpkin soup made Bueokgan an easy lunch to share with a parent.

Ulsan pork bulgogi and hangover soup weekend lunch: Boksan Haejang

Boksan Haejang is a haejangguk (hangover soup) restaurant in Songjeong-dong, Buk-gu, Ulsan, near Goheon Middle School. On a weekend lunch visit, two bowls of Boksan haejangguk, a small pork bulgogi and a bowl of rice took more than 40 minutes to arrive, but the broth came loaded with glass noodles, radish, bean sprouts and meat and tasted clean and refreshing. If you can spare the wait, Boksan Haejang makes a satisfying weekend lunch.
