Why we went to Haengbokhan Udon Gage for old-style donkatsu at Sinjeongnegeori
My husband and I suddenly had a huge craving for old-style donkatsu (breaded pork cutlet), so we searched near Sinjeongnegeori Station and found Haengbokhan Udon Gage Sinjeongnegeori Station Branch (행복한우동가게 신정네거리역점). 😊 Thick Japanese-style tonkatsu is great these days, but sometimes I miss the nostalgic cutlet we ate as kids at old Western-style diners.
I assumed it was just an udon specialist, as the name suggests, but it turned out to serve everything from donkatsu to udon to rice bowls, which made it a really good place for a meal. 😋

What is the atmosphere like at Haengbokhan Udon Gage Sinjeongnegeori Station Branch?
The interior is retro, full of 1970s–80s vibes. 🎞️ It felt homey from the moment we walked in. It's not flashy like a trendy café, but it's a space that takes our parents' generation, and ours too, down memory lane.
There are old-fashioned props here and there on the walls, and the whole place feels warm, so we could eat comfortably. That atmosphere made it feel even more like a proper Sinjeongnegeori local favorite. 😊
Best of all, there were lots of families and plenty of solo diners too, so it's easy to visit without feeling self-conscious. Takeout and delivery are available, and there are baby chairs, so it should work well with kids.

What did the two of us order?
My husband and I ordered three dishes: old-style donkatsu, chili udon and spicy pork rice bowl. 🍽️ We agonized over the menu before settling on this combination.
- 🥩 Old-style donkatsu
- 🌶️ Chili udon
- 🍚 Spicy pork rice bowl (jeyuk deopbap)
Honestly, I thought three dishes would be too much for two people, but everything was so good that we nearly finished it all. 😂

How big and how good was the old-style donkatsu?
The old-style donkatsu nearly covers the whole plate, with crispy fried cutlet and plenty of sauce on top. I was startled when it arrived. It is seriously huge. 😲 It looked exactly like the nostalgic Western-style cutlet we all picture.
On the first bite, the crispy coating and moist meat went together really well. The sauce wasn't too strong, sweet with a savory depth, so we kept reaching for more. My husband said "this is really good" right after his first bite. 😆
I immediately understood why so many people come to Haengbokhan Udon Gage as a Sinjeongnegeori donkatsu favorite. Personally, it was among the most satisfying cutlets I've had recently.

Does the chili udon go well with the donkatsu?
The chili udon adds a spicy kick that pairs really well with the rich old-style donkatsu. 🌶️🍜 As the shop's signature dish, the udon was better than I expected.
The noodles are made in-house, and they were really chewy. The broth, simmered from bonito flakes (katsuobushi) and kelp, had a deep flavor, and I liked how clean and refreshing it was.
The more I slurped, the more I kept craving that refreshing broth. 😊 The basics are solid, as you'd expect from an udon specialist, and I could see why it's known as a Sinjeongnegeori favorite.

Is the spicy pork rice bowl worth ordering?
The spicy pork rice bowl was better than expected too. 🔥 It had a subtle smoky grill flavor, and the sweet-and-spicy seasoning went really well with the rice.
The portion was generous enough for a full meal, with plenty of meat. Mixing it with seaweed flakes made it even tastier. I thought donkatsu and udon were the mains, but the pork rice bowl was quite satisfying too. 😋

Can you go for a late-night meal near Sinjeongnegeori?

- When you suddenly crave a bowl of udon

Final thoughts on our meal at Haengbokhan Udon Gage
I hear Haengbokhan Udon Gage started as a small udon shop in 1997 and has kept its spot for a long time. ✨ Knowing that story, I could feel the care in every bowl.
Nostalgic old-style donkatsu, chili udon with a deep broth and a hearty spicy pork rice bowl, all in a retro setting. It was a really satisfying meal, and a day when my husband and I enjoyed a good meal together for the first time in a while. 😊
