Kiosk ordering at a Jongno Chinese restaurant: first shumai, Cheonghwa
In short
Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon is a knife-cut noodle and dim sum restaurant behind the Olive Young in Pimatgol alley, Jongno, Seoul. Two of us stopped in after sightseeing in Jongno and ordered beef knife-cut noodles, a yuxiang pork rice bowl and shumai from the kiosk at the table, and the deep bone broth and the shumai topped with flying fish roe were the highlights. Between noodles, rice bowls and dim sum, Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon is a Gwanghwamun Chinese restaurant that delivers across the board.

I recently went sightseeing in Jongno and was craving beef noodles and dim sum, so I stopped by Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon (청화 우육도삭면). Turns out it's a bit of a hidden gem that only insiders seem to know about!! We were so satisfied that we're posting this review right after eating.

Where is Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon, and what is the space like?

Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon sits behind the Olive Young in Pimatgol alley. We went a bit past lunchtime and it was still pretty crowded!

There's a menu board out front so you can check it before going in. It's known for its knife-cut noodles (dosakmyeon), but they also serve rice bowls, dim sum, and other Chinese dishes. With such a varied menu, it seems like a great spot to come with a group and try a bit of everything.

The place is pretty spacious. We were seated upstairs. There were quite a few foreign customers too..! With so many offices and office workers nearby, it seems like a great spot for company dinners or lunch.
The menu and how kiosk ordering works

Here's the menu. Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon specializes in knife-cut noodles and dim sum. I'd been curious about both for a while and finally got to try them this time. We ordered beef knife-cut noodles, yuxiang pork rice bowl, and shumai!

Ordering is done via kiosk >.< You can pay right at your table, which was super convenient haha.
The free table sides: peanuts and pickled cabbage

The basic side dishes. We got peanuts and pickled cabbage. I was so hungry I just inhaled the peanuts while waiting for the food...
How were the beef knife-cut noodles?

Beef knife-cut noodles! Look how rich it is, whoa. It looked kind of salty, but once I actually tried it, it wasn't that salty at all. It tasted a little like... yukgaejang (spicy beef soup)?

The broth is made straight from bones, so it's deep and rich. The umami in that broth is insane..! There's no strong spice smell, so it seems tailored to Korean tastebuds. The noodles were super chewy and thick — I thought they'd just taste like flour, but there was none of that, just pure deliciousness. The chew is completely different from other noodles!! And the portion is huge haha.

Eaten together with the beef that comes in the bowl 🤍 The meat is so tender and slides down together with the noodles.
What does the yuxiang pork rice bowl taste like?

Yuxiang pork rice bowl! I expected something like gochujapchae (spicy pepper stir-fry), but it was just a sweet-and-spicy Chinese-style stir-fried meat dish. It even tastes a little like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes)!

Along with the egg soup~~
The smoky char and spicy chili aroma really hit the spot. The rice was fluffy and cooked just right too. They say this place is known for its knife-cut noodles, but the rice bowl is great too!! While eating the rice bowl, taking a sip of the noodle broth in between gives you that perfect, intense Chinese flavor 🫶🏻 Personally, I liked that better than the egg soup? haha
My first dim sum: shumai topped with flying fish roe

Shumai, a shrimp and pork dim sum! Topped with flying fish roe on top... 🫶🏻🤤 No trace of pork smell at all, just really, really delicious.

The inside was seriously juicy, the meat juices were incredible... This was my first time having dim sum and it was really good! The flying fish roe topping is the kicker — that popping texture is great!!
Is Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon worth a visit?
Cheonghwa, a great beef noodle restaurant near Gwanghwamun! It specializes in knife-cut noodles, but the dim sum and rice bowls were both perfect too. With so many office workers around Jongno and Gwanghwamun, this seems like a great lunch spot too 🤍 The place is spacious with plenty of seating, so it works for company dinners, and I saw quite a few solo diners as well! The staff were all really kind and the service was great. Looking at other reviews, a lot of people seem to order the kkanpunggi (sweet and sour pork) here too... the reviews are so good that I'll have to try it next time. If you're craving knife-cut noodles or dim sum, everyone should visit Cheonghwa Uyuk Dosakmyeon 🫶🏻
