Yongsan tteokbokki spot, 30-minute Catch Table wait: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) and bunsik (Korean snack food) restaurant on a side street off Hangang-daero 39-gil in Yongsan, Seoul, open since 2004. On a weekend lunch visit, signing up at the Catch Table kiosk meant about a 30-minute wait before the Hyeonseoni Set (26,000 won) arrived in medium spice with tteokbokki, sundae, gimbap, fritters and eomuk fish cake. The chewy wheat-flour tteokbokki and the fried squid were the highlights at Hyeonseonine, while the eomuk tasted slightly underdone.

Today I visited Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점), famous for tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) in Yongsan! I'd wanted to try it for ages since it's such a well-known spot. I went on the weekend and, sure enough, there was a wait... 😂 But having come all this way, I couldn't just leave, so I waited it out and ate!
Where is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, and when is it open?

What the Hyeonseonine storefront looks like

It's tucked inside an alley, so at first I was like 'where is it?' — but looking up, the Hyeonseonine sign was visible from far away 👀 Thanks to that, it wasn't hard to find at all :)

How long is the weekend lunch wait at Hyeonseonine?
We visited on a weekend for lunch and had to wait about 30 minutes before getting seated! Even while waiting, people kept finishing up and leaving — which meant just as many kept coming in too. If you want to visit without a wait, I'd recommend avoiding lunch or dinner peak hours!

You register for the wait using the Catch Table kiosk inside the restaurant!
Inside the restaurant: seating and atmosphere

Walking inside, sure enough, it was packed with customers 🔥

The ceilings are pretty high, so even with a lot of customers, it didn't feel too cramped. Up on the walls hung a row of old photos from Hyeonseonine's earlier days — turns out this place has been running since 2004!
Hyeonseonine menu and how to order at the kiosk

Once staff seat you, you order from the kiosk! There's a good range — set menus, tteokbokki, fritters, sundae (Korean blood sausage) and more :)

What we ordered: ✔️Hyeonseoni Set (₩26,000)
Looking around, a lot of people were having the Hyeonseoni Beer Set too. If you like tteokbokki with beer, that combo looks like a good call 🍺
What comes in the 26,000-won Hyeonseoni Set

Everything came out in under 5 minutes! Tteokbokki, sundae, gimbap, fritters, eomuk (fish cake) — a full spread ✨ Bunsik really tastes best eaten this way, with everything laid out together, haha.

Medium-spice tteokbokki with chewy wheat rice cakes
You can choose the spice level for the tteokbokki, so you can order to your taste! 🌶️ We went medium — the sauce soaked well into the rice cakes, and since they're wheat-flour tteok (miltteok), the chewy texture was great.

Fried squid: the best bite of the set
My favorite fritter is fried squid, and here the batter was crispy while the squid stayed tender, not chewy in a bad way. Dipped right into the tteokbokki sauce, it was so good.

Sundae (blood sausage) and gimbap (seaweed rice roll)
The sundae (blood sausage) came generously loaded with organs too! Chewy sundae plus liver and lungs, all mixed in — dipped in the tteokbokki sauce, the combo was spot on. The gimbap (seaweed rice roll) came cut into bite-sized pieces, perfect for pairing with the tteokbokki :)

The gimbap was true to old-school bunsik style — simple and solid!

The eomuk fish cake that fell short
The eomuk (fish cake) was a little disappointing.. 🥲 Personally it felt slightly underdone to me. I wish it had been cooked through a bit more! Still, the warm broth was nice to sip on between bites of tteokbokki, haha.

Naver review event: free slushie or tteokbokki size-up
After we finished eating, I noticed there was a Naver review event running too! Write a photo review and save the place on Naver Map, and you get either a cold slushie or a tteokbokki size-up — worth knowing if you're planning a visit :)

I noticed a lot of people ordering the instant hot-pot style tteokbokki too, so next time I want to try that! If you're looking for a great tteokbokki spot in Yongsan, give Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch a visit :)
