Insadong gomtang in moon-jar dishware and crisp kkakdugi: Wolhadong
In short
Wolhadong is a hanok gomtang (beef and pork bone soup) restaurant hidden in an alley near Ssamziegil in Insadong, Seoul. Two bowls of wolha gomtang came to 24,000 won (12,000 won each), served in dishware the restaurant makes itself in the shape of Joseon moon jars, with clear broth, toryeom rice (rice warmed in the broth) and crisp kkakdugi radish kimchi. Individually wrapped utensils and chili oil on every table made Wolhadong a satisfying Insadong lunch.

There was a place I'd kept saved on Naver Maps forever, finally set a date and went..🩷 Wolhadong, quietly tucked away in an alley near Ssamziegil in Insadong.

A serene hanok vibe plus clean, deep flavor.. a place to taste a proper Insadong Korean-style gomtang!!

Inside the hanok: interior and seating at Wolhadong
The moment I opened the door tucked inside the alley, a warm, gentle hanok mood washed over me. White porcelain pieces hung on the walls here and there, deepening that classic hanok stillness.

Seating includes tables for 2 and for 4, evenly spread out, plus counter bar seats that are great for solo dining!! Looked like a good spot to grab a light Insadong lunch on your own too!!

Especially if you're hygiene-conscious like me, there's a detail that'll win you over instantly — the spoons and chopsticks come individually wrapped in paper, boosting my goodwill by 2x before I even ate haha👍

Being a gukbap place, the menu is built around gukbap and cold jeyuk. I ordered wolha gomtang, 12,000 won x 2 bowls!! Apparently if you do the Naver photo review event, they give you a cold jeyuk tasting too haha

Wolha gomtang, 12,000 won: clear broth and toryeom rice
Not long after ordering, the wolha gomtang appeared at lightning speed!! Speed is everything for a gukbap place, so I loved that it came out fast haha. The broth was clear and transparent, with rice neatly warmed through in it (toryeom), no trace of meaty funk at all.. the clean, pristine look was a work of art..🥹

The dishware itself was apparently custom-made based on moon jars — fitting for a refined Insadong Korean gomtang, the whole table setting felt upscale, like being properly cared for.

Taking a sip of the broth, it wasn't greasy at all — it felt like eating home-cooked food, deeply comforting and full of depth haha. Turns out they use cheonggeunjang, radish fermented using a recipe revived from a Joseon-era cookbook, plus a radish-based broth, which is why the aftertaste is so clean!! 0_0

The rice is apparently a blend of Sindongjin, Koshihikari, and barley — each toryeom-warmed grain kept its texture and it was so delicious!!💖
Even stirred it up, the broth stayed clear, and the rice broke down easily without weighing on my stomach — so good..this.. Korean-food lovers need to come here right now..

Tried it with the special sauce they served alongside — something like ssamjang.. this.. this is it.. this.. no doubt about it!!!! Officially my #1 Insadong Korean gomtang.

The meat, the crisp kkakdugi and the chili oil
The meat itself was super tender, sliced thin, pairing 200% with the clear gomtang..? And the real kick of this place is the kimchi, especially the kkakdugi!! The crisp, well-fermented kkakdugi radish kimchi is seriously insanely good..;;

For Koreans who love spicy food.. there's also chili oil set at every table so you can add it to taste. Apparently drizzling a bit of chili oil in after you're halfway through the gomtang gives you a sharper, deeper flavor haha

I'm a fan of the clean, clear broth so I enjoyed it plain, and since the base broth itself is so good, I was completely satisfied haha
