Sokcho Central Market jeotgal shop: 650g pollock roe for ₩30,000
In short
Hwangbuja Jeotgal is a jeotgal (salted seafood) shop at stall 25 of Sokcho Tourist Fish Market in Sokcho, Gangwon, selling by the tub for takeaway or courier delivery. On a family trip, the writer bought 650g of grade-1 low-salt white pollock roe for 30,000 won, packed tight into a tub with ice packs and a cooler bag that kept it frozen all the way to Seoul. The roe sacs were large and only mildly salty, so Hwangbuja Jeotgal's pollock roe worked perfectly over rice with just scallion, sesame oil and sesame seeds.

I went to Sokcho Tourist Fish Market with my family during our trip!! We were browsing the market when my mom suddenly said, "the color on this jeotgal (salted seafood) is insane~~" haha. Trusting my mom's eye, we went into

- 🛍️ What I bought: Grade-1 low-salt pollock roe 650g, ₩30,000

Once you find stall 25, it's big and bright so Hwangbuja Jeotgal is easy to spot!! ★Packing + delivery specialist★

The red seasoning was glossy and shiny — now I get why my mom spotted the color from a distance haha.

Hwangbuja Jeotgal price list: pollock hoe-muchim and scallop jeotgal
The shop's most popular item, pollock hoe-muchim (spicy seasoned raw pollock), was ₩25,000 for 1kg and ₩15,000 for 600g.

Scallop jeotgal and matssiat jeotgal (seasoned seafood roe) were ₩20,000 for 1kg and ₩15,000 for 700g, with prices clearly labeled!!

Tell them which product and how much you want, and they pack it into a tub right on the spot, pressed down firmly.♥ My family went with our usual favorite, the low-salt pollock roe!!

Grade-1 low-salt pollock roe, 650g for 30,000 won — how big are the roe sacs?
Up close, the low-salt pollock roe had a clean, pale pink color and the roe sacs were seriously big and plump. A lot of them kept their full shape, so they're great for grilling or cooking, and just as good eaten plain with sesame oil and scallion as a side dish..!

It was ₩30,000 for 650g, and they packed the tub full of big roe sacs with no empty space left.♬

This is the fun of market shopping, right? haha

If you spend over ₩30,000 and leave a receipt review, they give you 80g of tasting jeotgal as a freebie!! I went on a weekend though.. the market was so packed I couldn't do the review on the spot!! T.T haha

How Hwangbuja Jeotgal packs jeotgal for the drive back to Seoul
Hwangbuja Jeotgal packs everything carefully with ice packs and a cooler bag to keep the smell in and prevent spoilage.

So even if you need to carry it all the way to Seoul, no worries!! haha Since I bought mine on the first day, I kept it frozen in Sokcho and carried it back to Seoul like that.

Once I got home, I portioned it into single-serving amounts and froze them, thawing a little at a time before eating!! It's way more convenient to keep it split into small portions than to thaw the whole thing at once — you just grab what you need!!

Two parking vouchers cut the market parking fee to 300 won
Oh right. You can also get parking vouchers!! If you park at the Sokcho Jungang Market lot, make sure to grab a voucher for the discount.. but you can only get the discount on 2 per day, so no need to collect a bunch haha. I was at the market for about an hour, and using 2 vouchers brought my parking fee down to ₩300 haha (it's cheap even without the discount, tbh).

How the low-salt pollock roe tasted at home over rice
The evening we got home, I slit the skin of the low-salt pollock roe open, scraped out the roe, tossed in chopped scallion and a drizzle of sesame oil ~ ★ and sprinkled on sesame seeds. It looked so nutty and delicious T.T.T.T

No cooking needed — just mix a few ingredients and it's do·ne!! The roe pops nicely in your mouth, and it's not as salty as regular pollock roe, so it's great piled high over white rice!!!

If you're looking for a jeotgal spot at Sokcho Jungang Market for a travel souvenir food, stop by Hwangbuja Jeotgal — lots of varieties and generous packing ..★
My mom's eye for jeotgal.. spot-on again this time haha
