Everyone has asked themselves "what should I eat today?" on a Jeju trip, right? After black pork, seafood and even rows of gogi-guksu (pork noodle soup), there comes a day when you crave hot rice and a spicy braised fish. That day I went to Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap (제주섬고등어쌈밥), a well-known Jocheon spot. I was invited as a sponsored reviewer this time, but I'll be honest about how I felt.

Where is Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap, and where can you park?
It's at 418 Johamhaean-ro, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si, 1st floor, on the Hamdeok coastal road side. It's close to Hamdeok Beach, so it fits easily into a Hamdeok itinerary, and it's handy before or after a sea walk or a café stop. There's parking right next to the restaurant, so driving a rental car was no problem. Just note that the spaces aren't plentiful.

Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap opening hours and closing day
The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (last order 8 p.m.). It opens early, so it's also good for a late breakfast or early lunch. Just remember that it's closed on Tuesdays.

Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap menu and prices
The signature dish is the mackerel ssambap (mackerel stew served with leafy wraps and rice) at ₩36,000 for two. According to the restaurant's introduction, they've been making braised mackerel for 50 years. The menu breaks down roughly like this:
- Mackerel ssambap ₩36,000 for 2; black pork duruchigi (spicy stir-fry) ₩42,000 for 2
- Sea urchin seaweed soup, abalone hot pot, hairtail soup ₩17,000 each
- Grilled fish such as mackerel and tilefish ₩20,000–34,000 range
- Braised hairtail (medium) ₩65,000
Prices may change depending on when you visit, so please check the menu on site.
Aged-kimchi mackerel ssambap that wins you over on looks alone
The braised mackerel comes in a wide pot instead of a stone bowl, and it caught my eye right away. Plenty of aged kimchi (mukeunji) is laid over the red sauce, with onion and big chunks of mackerel tucked between. It arrives already simmered, so you can dig in right away.

When I lifted the mackerel with tongs, the flesh was plump. The seasoning had soaked all the way through, and there was almost no fishy taste. The spicy-sweet sauce goes so well with rice that I kept spooning up the broth too.

Tear up the aged kimchi in the braised mackerel

The hidden star here is the aged kimchi. Lift it with tongs and it unfurls layer by layer along the grain, soft and tender from long cooking.
Its sour, clean taste turns sweet in the sauce, and just the kimchi soaked in the braising liquid on top of rice can make a whole bowl disappear. Wrapped in a leaf together with mackerel, you get sourness and richness at once, which was even better.

Is the grilled mackerel worth ordering too?

I ordered grilled mackerel along with the braise. It comes spread wide open on a big plate, golden brown outside with crispy skin. A lemon wedge, lettuce and other wrap vegetables come with it, so you can enjoy it fresh and bright.

Lift a piece with chopsticks and white flesh flakes apart under the glossy skin. Crisp outside, moist inside. A light squeeze of lemon brings out the clean flavor even more, so it was perfect for alternating with the spicy braised mackerel.
Self-serve bar and side dishes
At the self-serve bar inside the restaurant, you can fetch more wrap vegetables and side dishes. I liked that I could refill without feeling awkward, and the side dishes were neat and tidy, so the rice went down easily. In reviews, many people praise the house-made ganjang gejang (soy sauce-marinated raw crab), so I'll definitely try it next time.
Can you bring kids or pets to Jeju Seom Godeungeo Ssambap?
There are baby chairs and pets are reportedly allowed, so it works for family trips or trips with a dog. Reservations and group seating are also possible, so call ahead if you have a big group.
