Ilsan KINTEX bakery before closing: freezing tips, Boulangerie Tan

Boulangerie Tan, Hyundai Department Store KINTEX is a bakery in the B1 food hall of Hyundai Department Store KINTEX in Ilsan, Goyang, opened by a Paju bakery from Unjeong known for queues before opening. The writer visited around 7:30 p.m., just before the department store closed, and found the cornet pies sold out. The writer still took home a chocolate baguette (₩5,700), a pollack roe potato salt bread (₩4,000) and a pumpkin cream cheese campagne, then reheated them in an air fryer. Verdict: go to Boulangerie Tan KINTEX early because breads sell out fast, and freeze any leftovers, then thaw and air-fry them.

Paju Unjeong café on Sunday: apple Earl Grey financier, Pound Coffee

Pound Coffee Unjeong Main Branch is a coffee and baked-goods café right in front of Unjeong Health Park in Paju, Gyeonggi. On a Sunday visit around 4pm the salty choco and salty caramel financiers were sold out, so the writer had a decaf café latte (₩5,000) with five financiers: hazelnut choco, matcha soboro, cinnamon sugar, apple Earl Grey and vanilla plain. Verdict: Pound Coffee Unjeong Main Branch balances coffee and financiers well and is a go-to latte spot in Unjeong.

Paju bakery café with honeycomb pizza and a baby niece: Four & More

Four & More is a large bakery brunch café on Soraji-ro in Paju, Gyeonggi, with three floors and a rooftop terrace. On a weekend visit with her mother and baby niece, the writer ordered the scallion cream cheese baguette, ricotta salad and honey quattro formaggi wood-fired pizza. She especially loved the sweet-and-salty pizza topped with honeycomb and the river view through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Four & More is worth recommending if you want a big Paju café for a family brunch on a drive.

Seokgi Sidae (석기시대) is a Korean restaurant specializing in duck jumulleok (spicy marinated duck) on Songsan-ro in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang, right in front of Gusan IC on Jayu-ro. With a large parking lot and group seating, Seokgi Sidae is a great fit for three-generation family dinners.

Wondang bakery café: Häagen-Dazs mango bingsu & free fans, Baedagol

Baedagol Bakery House (배다골베이커리하우스) is a large bakery café with a garden in Wondang, Deogyang-gu, Goyang. Its summer-only fresh mango wareureu bingsu (piled-high mango shaved ice, 25,000 won) comes with thick, soft fresh mango, fine milk ice and Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream, sweet enough without the condensed milk. With mango bingsu pricey everywhere these days, the Baedagol Bakery House version felt like good value for its size.

Paju café near Ilsan: sunset mango snow bingsu for 3, Fruit Forest

Fruit Forest Paju Direct Store is a fresh-fruit bingsu (Korean shaved ice) café on Dolgoji-gil in the Simhaksan food alley, Paju. Three friends visited on a weekday around 7:30 pm and shared a 28,000 won fresh mango snow bingsu (serves 2–3) while watching the sunset through floor-to-ceiling windows. The mango was sweet and well ripened, and the milk ice never turned watery. For mango bingsu chosen on fruit quality in Ilsan or Paju, Fruit Forest Paju Direct Store is a strong recommendation.

Ilsan Italian lunch: jamón fig salad and rucolina pizza at Millepollie

Millepollie is a wine-and-pasta Italian restaurant on Bamlidan-gil in Jeongbalsan, Ilsan (Goyang), and a place the writer keeps coming back to. The 2-person lunch set (59,000 won) brought starter bread, a jamón (Spanish cured ham) fig salad, gamberi aglio pasta and a rucolina pizza, so filling that half the pizza went home in a box. With wood-toned decor and a private room, Millepollie is a strong pick for dates and group meals.

Boryeong pizza pub for 6: pistachio cream ale at Daecheon Brewery

Daecheon Brewery Craft Beer Brewery & Pizza Pub is a local craft brewery and wood-fired pizza pub near Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Chungnam. The writer booked a table for a group of 6 on Naver, came with a dog, and tried Boryeong Mud Lager, Wonsando IPA, Ocheon Porter, Nokdo Pistachio Cream Ale and a gorgonzola wood-fired pizza, then took bottled beer back to the lodging for a second round. A planned one-beer stop after lunch turned into a satisfying pizza-and-beer meal, making Daecheon Brewery a recommended pizza-and-beer stop on a Daecheon trip.

Boulangerie Tan is a Paju bakery whose baguettes and sandwiches are a must-try.

Dolpanseok Jjamppong Paju Simhaksan Branch is a newly opened Chinese restaurant on Dolgoji-gil near Simhaksan in Paju, Gyeonggi, specializing in stone-bowl jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) and jjajang (black bean noodles). On an early weekday lunch, the writer ordered the original-flavor stone jjamppong with one extra whole squid as a set with donchitang, which comes with homemade mini pork cutlets and chicken gangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken). The seafood never seemed to run out and the stone bowl kept everything hot to the end. The portion is generous enough for 3 to 4 people, making Dolpanseok Jjamppong a hearty meal after a Simhaksan hike or drive.
