South-facing Gwangju café: red bean mammoth bread and hot latte at Sum

In short

Sum (카페 숨) is a large mountain-view bakery café on Ojeon-gil in Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, split into a main building and an annex with a media room and garden. On a weekend drive, the writer paid 19,700 won for two: a hot Americano (6,500 won), a hot café latte (7,000 won) and a red bean mammoth bread (6,200 won), and liked the roomy parking, the warmth of the south-facing windows and the densely filled bread. For an outing near Seoul with open mountain views, nutty coffee and a hefty mammoth bread, Sum is a good fit.

I visited Sum (카페 숨), a large café in Namhansanseong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. I hope this is useful if you're planning a weekend drive for wide-open mountain views and a high-quality bakery.

Sum café in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, with a mountain view

Sum in 3 lines

  • A large café in Namhansanseong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, with overwhelming mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows
  • A main building and an annex (media room, garden), so the spaces are varied and pleasant
  • A great pairing of hot latte (₩7,000) and red bean mammoth bread (₩6,200) (as of 2026)

Sum is a large café known for its open mountain views through huge windows and genuinely delicious, sweet, soft bread. I love wide-open views in nature, so I went on a weekend drive. This is based on my recent 2026 visit, with everything from parking to details of each space.

Is there enough parking at Sum in Namhansanseong?

Sum has plenty of dedicated parking. At 1 p.m. on a weekday only about 30% of the spaces were taken, so even a beginner driver could park comfortably.

Dedicated parking lot at Sum

Heading out to the outskirts like this, the access road is often narrow or parking is chaos, which is stressful. As soon as I arrived, Sum had lots of dedicated spaces, so it passed my first-impression test. Before the weekend peak of 2–3 p.m., I think you can park without much trouble.

How are the main building and the annex different at Sum?

The main building has high ceilings and good light in an open layout, while the annex is split into a media art mood and a garden mood, so you can pick a seat to suit your purpose. Having two separate buildings is Sum's biggest feature, and it widens your options depending on the atmosphere you like.

Floors 1 and 2 of the main building have floor-to-ceiling windows, so the mountain view comes in clearly from any seat. Just sitting and watching the scenery felt so refreshing. There's also a rooftop, which feels wonderfully open.

Isn't it cold indoors halfway up a mountain?

Honestly, I worried it would be too cold inside, being halfway up a mountain, but thanks to the owner's careful temperature control and the sun through the south-facing windows, it was actually warm, haha. By the time I'd eaten, I ended up taking my jacket off.

Does Sum have seating that's easy with kids?

Sum has clean baby chairs, and the seats on the first floor are spaced more than 1.5 m apart, so getting a stroller in is easy. Since Namhansanseong cafés get lots of families, convenience with little ones matters a lot.

A hygienically kept baby chair was set out on one side of the café. There's no elevator inside, but the terrace and first floor of the main building have wide gaps between tables, so there was no cramped feeling even with a stroller.

The outdoor terrace is nicely landscaped too, and on a clear day without fine dust it looked like a pleasant place to sit in the natural breeze. The separate men's and women's restrooms were very clean and convenient.

How were the hot latte and red bean mammoth bread at Sum?

I paid ₩19,700 for two at Sum. The nutty, low-acidity latte with the red bean mammoth bread (a big stuffed bun), which has a high ratio of cream and red bean, worked great as a meal replacement.

Americano, latte and red bean mammoth bread at Sum

We ordered a hot Americano (₩6,500), a hot café latte (₩7,000) and the bakery's red bean mammoth bread (₩6,200). Considering the average drink prices at big cafés on the outskirts of Gwangju, Gyeonggi, it's a reasonable price range.

Hot coffee at Sum

The coffee uses beans with a heavy, dark-chocolate-like body and a strong nutty flavor rather than prominent acidity, and I exclaimed "this coffee is really good" right after the first sip.

Red bean mammoth bread topped with streusel at Sum

The mammoth bread has a crunchy streusel on top, and inside you get soft milk cream, sweet chestnuts and tasty blueberry jam. It was packed with no gaps, and heavy just to hold.

Cutting it open, the filling ratio was about cream 4 : red bean 4 : bread 2, which is excellent. A sip of nutty latte with a bite of the sweet bread was simply the perfect combination.

FAQ before visiting Sum

How long is the weekend afternoon wait at Sum?

On a normal weekend it's comfortable until about 1 p.m., but between 2 and 4 p.m., right after lunch, competition for the best window seats in the main building is fierce and a wait is likely. I recommend going in the morning if you can.

Does Sum have group seating?

Sum has plenty of large tables seating 6 or more throughout the main building and annex, so it's fine for a big family gathering. When I visited, a group sat split across several tables on the annex's second floor, yet they chatted comfortably without feeling separated.^^

Would I go back to Sum?

It was a perfect place to escape the cramped, stuffy city, take in a full mountain view and heal with good coffee and dessert. Big space, great taste and easy parking, all three boxes ticked, so I'm 200% planning to revisit every time the seasons change. If you're heading out near Gwangju, Gyeonggi, do stop by.

I've been running around all day and then wrote this post properly, and it's already so late. I need to wash up and get to bed fast to get to work early tomorrow.
