The writer went with her husband early on a Friday evening, compared the Jeongwon marinated grill for 2 with Idong galbi (beef rib), and finished with mul naengmyeon (cold noodles) and doenjang stew. Jeongwon Galbi's marinade is mild rather than strong, making it a safe choice for company dinners and family gatherings.

On a Sunday afternoon, the writer and his wife drove to La Cuesta Gwangju in a Toyota MR-S and had autumn chestnut bread, a milk cream salt bun, a red bean and butter ciabatta and the La Cuesta latte. With easy parking and plenty to see and do, La Cuesta Gwangju makes a great drive café for car lovers.

The writer arrived with Mom after the usual dinner hour and ordered the old-style kimchi stew with pot rice for 2 plus the cheese king egg roll, enjoying the stew's big chunks of pork and an egg roll packed with cheese. Oneuldo Utja Chowol is famous for duruchigi, but its kimchi stew is cheap and delicious too.

Bomseol (봄설) is a Korean set-meal restaurant in Chowol, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, serving grilled mackerel, spicy pork stir-fry, bori gulbi (barley-aged dried croaker) and ganjang gejang (soy-marinated crab) sets. A couple came for a late lunch and, on the staff's suggestion, ordered one grilled mackerel set and one spicy pork set, finding the mackerel free of fishy smell, the pork mild rather than harsh, and the side dishes neat with a self-serve bar for refills. With a large parking lot and a tea space next door, Bomseol is a family dining spot worth returning to.

Day-off Gwangju bakery café date: pineapple onion bread at Sum

Sum (남한산성 카페 숨) is a large bakery café tucked into the forest in Ojeon-ri, Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. The writer visited Sum around 2 p.m. on a weekend with a partner just off a night shift, sat by a 1st-floor window and had two iced Americanos (₩6,500 each), onion bread with pineapple (₩6,500) and scallion cream cheese salt bread (₩5,500), then packed the leftover bread at the self-service packing station. With a big parking lot, floor-to-ceiling forest-view windows and a bold, non-acidic Americano, Sum is an easy date stop even for beginner drivers.

Hamjjirang Tojjirang (햄찌랑토찌랑) is an animal experience café in Docheok-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, where visitors can meet hamsters, rabbits, ducks, chickens, a baby pig, parrots and a crested gecko. At Hamjjirang Tojjirang, the writer's family fed the chickens and the baby pig, joined the 4-month-old baby rabbit interaction zone, and laughed as a parrot sat on dad's shoulder for a long while. Hamjjirang Tojjirang is a great Gwangju outing with an elementary schooler, especially the day after Everland.

Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Opo Maesan (옛날경성순대국 오포매산점) is a sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup) restaurant on Hoean-daero in Opo, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, so busy that its parking lot fills up at lunchtime. The writer and her husband ordered the sundae-only sundaeguk and the spicy sundaeguk and loved the chewy sticky-rice sundae, the well-stuffed native sundae, the clean, savory clear broth and the geotjeori (fresh kimchi) and seokbakji (radish kimchi). Verdict: Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Opo Maesan served the best sundaeguk the writer has had in a long time.

The writer had the odor-free beef-bone-broth sundaeguk and the meaty ugeoji (cabbage leaf) pork bone hangover soup, and found the dedicated parking lot out front and the self-serve bar with refillable kimchi, chilies and onions convenient. Old Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Gonjiam Branch is a filling, well-balanced meal before or after Hwadamsup or Gonjiam Resort, with good taste, portions, cleanliness and parking.

Sangnok Hoegwan Yeontan-gui Taejeon Branch is a briquette-fire Korean BBQ restaurant in Taejeon-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi.
