A Haeundae Chinese restaurant with a gorgeous European vibe on Dalmaji-gil in Busan — I went to check out Bueokgan Chinese. A can't-fail meal, a simple meal, jjajangmyeon you can enjoy without any pressure! Chinese dishes both adults and kids love~

There's a hidden gem on Dalmaji-gil that's known for its atmosphere as much as its food, and that's Bueokgan Chinese. This place is completely different from the typical Chinese restaurant you'd picture. With its pretty, modern European interior, a wide open floor, and the coolness of the floor-to-ceiling windows, it's just as good for family dining as it is for a date with your partner.

Even while eating, the floor-to-ceiling windows let in a view of greenery outside, which I loved. I imagine it'd feel great on a rainy day too, looking out. Every single light fixture seems carefully considered, blending with the interior — it's pretty enough to rival the trendiest cafés with great views these days.

First impressions, from the entrance to the dining hall

You push open a big door at the entrance, and there's another door beyond it. You pass through a small hallway, open the door again, and are surprised by a pretty, modern European-style space. The first impression: simple, clean, tidy — this is a Chinese restaurant?! Amazing!!

Group tables and high chairs: is Bueokgan good for a family meal?

The floor is about 50 pyeong, and the tables are spaced generously apart, which I liked, plus there's group seating — recommended for gatherings, work dinners, or family meals!

There are high chairs too, so it's good to visit with a child. The restroom is toward the back of the restaurant — the area screened off with a cream-colored curtain is the restroom.

Kiosk ordering and how much lunch costs

You order via kiosk, and best of all, the prices are reasonable! I assumed a fancy-looking Chinese restaurant like this would be pricey, but 🙅‍♀️not at all. Since it's in my neighborhood, it'd be easy to come back often without feeling burdened.

I wanted to order from the dish menu and have a beer too, but since I came for lunch, I kept it simple with jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) / chili ganjjajang / shrimp fried rice. Jjajangmyeon is a dish almost nobody dislikes and never fails, so I figured I'd start with the basics today!!

How the shrimp fried rice tasted

The shrimp fried rice was fried well — you could feel every fluffy grain of rice — and the seasoning was just right. The shrimp were big and plump too! The texture overall was great, and the egg drop soup wasn't too strongly seasoned either, which I appreciated. That made me think even more that this place is great to visit with kids — good, good for a family meal!!

BUUK jjajangmyeon vs chili ganjjajang: what's the difference?

The BUUK jjajangmyeon was — how should I put it — cleaner-tasting than most places. It wasn't overdone and had less greasiness, which I liked. The chili ganjjajang was truly a chili bomb! It had a richer flavor than the BUUK jjajangmyeon, and thanks to the chili, it was spicy-sharp and delicious! The sauce itself isn't spicy — it's just topped with chopped chili like a garnish, which is why it's called chili ganjjajang. It's chili on top, not egg. [Doesn't seem to be the spicy 땡초 chili either...] *Personally, I liked the ganjjajang more😋 The pieces of meat in the black bean sauce were also big, chewy, and delicious.

Even after looking around for a while, the European-style interior and atmosphere seemed perfect for having a drink too!! Next time I'll have to come back in the evening for dishes and a beer.
