Goseong sashimi takeout with thick cuts: Bongpo Hoega

On the last day of my Sokcho trip, I took out assorted sashimi from Bongpo Hoega (봉포 회가) in Goseong to share with my sibling and their spouse, who had come to our accommodation. After driving along the coast and taking in the sea, we unpacked the sashimi at the accommodation, and the thick-cut texture was what stayed with me most.

Is it close to Bongpo Beach and easy to park?

Bongpo Hoega is at 69 Haksachon-gil, Toseong-myeon, Goseong-gun. We drove from our accommodation along the coastal road, and I could smell the sea when we arrived. It is close enough to walk from Bongpo Beach and Bongpo Port.

There is dedicated parking directly in front of the restaurant, so we parked easily. Still, I thought it could get busy with tourist cars on weekends or during peak holiday season, so avoiding crowded meal times may be a good idea.

Is the atmosphere comfortable for dining in?

Inside, the clean wood interior immediately caught my eye. When I visited, I did not notice the fishy smell often associated with sashimi restaurants.

The tables were spaced widely apart, and large windows let in plenty of light. It looked quiet and comfortable, so I thought it would be fine for a family meal. I got takeaway this time, but I would like to eat at the restaurant next time.

What did I take out, and what were the price and portions like?

Looking over the menu, I saw that seasonal live fish was the focus, along with sets that included king crab or red snow crab. We wanted plenty of sashimi, so we ordered the medium assorted sashimi platter to take out.

For takeaway, it may feel a little pricey. Still, when I opened it, I was pleased with the amount and condition of the sashimi, as well as the basic side dishes included, so it did not feel like money wasted to me.

Not long after ordering, we received the neatly packaged sashimi. When we laid it out on the living-room table at our accommodation, the spread looked generous, and my sibling and their spouse were happy to see the glossy sashimi.

How thick and chewy was the assorted sashimi?

What I liked most was the thickness of the sashimi. It was cut thickly, giving it a satisfyingly substantial bite.

With a light dip in soy sauce, it was chewy, with a subtly sweet and nutty flavor as I chewed.

I also made ssam (lettuce wraps) with two pieces of sashimi, garlic, chili pepper, and ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste). Even my sibling and their spouse, who are usually particular about seafood, enjoyed it and said the sashimi was sweet.

Is delivery to nearby accommodations available?

The in-store notice during my visit said delivery to nearby accommodations was also available. We picked it up ourselves, but if you plan to eat at your accommodation, it may be worth checking whether delivery is available.

We shared the thick-cut sashimi and spent the last night of the trip with my sibling and their spouse. The takeaway price may feel somewhat high, but the portion and texture worked well for us as a group wanting to enjoy sashimi at our accommodation. Hours may change, so check before visiting.
