Noon hanjeongsik in Chowol, Gwangju: mushroom tangsuyuk at Bomseol
In short
Bomseol is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant on Hyeonsan-ro 385beon-gil in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. A family lunch at noon came to 64,000 won for master-made soy marinated crab, fiery pork stir-fry and grilled mackerel, with banchan taken freely from the self-bar. The mushroom tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour mushrooms) and fried eggplant were the standouts, and the meal ended with scorched rice and nurungji tea from the stone pot.

I was looking for a place for a family meal out and ended up at Bomseol, a hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) spot in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, known for its neat and generous home-style spreads. Let me walk through the menu and the vibe of the place, one by one .ᐟ

Where Bomseol is and where to park in Chowol-eup
Bomseol is located in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, and given the location, it's a bit tough to get to without a car, so I'd recommend driving.

If you park in front of the building, just follow the stairs beside it up to the entrance.

Once you climb the stairs, the entrance to Bomseol comes right into view like this.

There's also a parking space set up behind the building, so if you're driving, you can use that comfortably too.

If you park behind the building, entering through this door connects straight into the inside of Bomseol.
There are little mood-lifting phrases tucked away in every corner of the interior (⺣◡⺣)♡
What Bomseol looks like at noon, and how the self-bar works
We visited around noon and the place was already bustling with customers mid-meal. Seeing so many people there at lunchtime, I could tell this is a spot that's been steadily loved in the neighborhood.
Inside, the wooden pillars and warm lighting created a cozy, familiar atmosphere — comfortable interior that also suited having a meal with family.
What I really loved was that every banchan is at a self-bar, so you can take as much as you want. The self-bar itself was kept very clean, and it was so satisfying being able to grab more of whatever side dish I liked without feeling self-conscious about it.
You can also help yourself to as much barley bibimbap and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) as you want.

The three dishes we ordered at Bomseol: 64,000 won total
The menu we ordered came to a total of ₩64,000 — soy marinated crab, fire-seasoned pork stir-fry, and grilled mackerel.

Once all the main dishes came out, the table filled up fast, and with all the various side dishes added on top, it really felt like receiving a properly set hanjeongsik spread.

It's been a while since I've had such a neat, well-arranged table (˶‾᷄ ⁻̫ ‾᷅˵) The banchan ranged from seasoned greens to kimchi to eggplant dishes, and each one was plated cleanly.

The three main dishes were really generous and looked delicious too, and the rest of the banchan overall wasn't overly seasoned — mild rather than strong, so you could really taste the ingredients themselves. Honestly there wasn't a single side dish I didn't reach for.

Paired with hot stone-pot rice and cheonggukjang, it was really filling. The cheonggukjang had a deep, savory broth too — a solid base combo to eat alongside the banchan.

Fiery pork stir-fry at Bomseol
The fire-seasoned pork stir-fry had a deep red sauce coating it appetizingly, with plenty of meat and onion mixed in.

The seasoning was a touch stronger than the other dishes, so it tasted a bit salty to me, but paired with rice or the milder banchan, it balanced out perfectly.

Master-made soy marinated crab
The soy marinated crab came in generous, chunky portions — great to eat alongside rice.

I tried a bite of the crab meat soaked in soy seasoning. The salty-savory taste immediately made me think of rice.

Grilled mackerel
The grilled mackerel came out nicely browned and was a decent size, so it was plenty to enjoy.
The flesh flaked apart easily, so it was really easy to eat, and the soft, salty mackerel with the milder banchan gave off that savory home-cooked feeling — really filling.

Best pick from the self-bar: mushroom tangsuyuk
Among the banchan I tried, my top pick was the mushroom sweet-and-sour .ᐟ.ᐟ The crispy batter paired so well with the sauce that it was the tastiest of all. I lost count of how many times I went back to the self-bar for more. It's the kind of side dish I keep thinking about.

This eggplant fritter was also really good. The softly cooked eggplant absorbed the seasoning well, went great with rice, and had that moist texture unique to eggplant that I loved.

Once you finish the stone-pot rice, you can also enjoy warm scorched-rice tea and crispy rice. It was a savory, filling way to wrap up the meal.
Banchan sold to take home, and the tea room at Bomseol
On the way out after eating, they also sell banchan separately, so it'd be great to pack some to take home after your meal.
They were also selling snacks like puffed corn and barley candy.

Across from the entrance, there's a space where you can enjoy some tea. If there's a wait, you can sit here with a cup of tea and wait leisurely, and it's also nice for a coffee after your meal.

The space felt spacious and relaxed, with a comfortable, pleasant atmosphere ꒰ᐢ. .ᐢ꒱₊˚⊹
Warm puffed corn was ready in the waiting room, so you can snack on it while waiting or as a dessert after your meal. Keeping it warm in a rice cooker so it's ready to eat — that's a real sign of a thoughtful owner ₊˚ෆ

Eating the crispy, nutty puffed corn while it was warm made it taste so much better. It was also nice and nutty as a dessert after the meal.
Is Bomseol worth it for a family lunch?
Bomseol served a table full of neat banchan, stone-pot rice, and cheonggukjang that was mild and nutty and really delicious, and finishing with the warm scorched-rice tea made it genuinely filling. The pork stir-fry, soy marinated crab, and grilled mackerel we had as mains were all generous portions with careful preparation too. But most of all, being able to get more of whatever banchan you liked, as much as you wanted, was the best part. If you're craving a hearty Korean meal, I'd recommend visiting Bomseol, a hanjeongsik spot in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, for a family meal out ⊹
