Daechang pub for group nights in Baekseok-dong: Set A at Chodaechang

Chodaechang Baekseok Branch is a daechang (beef large intestine) and specialty-cuts grill restaurant in the Baekseok-dong food alley in Ilsan, Goyang, near Baekseok Station Exit 6, and has reportedly been named in the Blue Ribbon Survey three years in a row. The writer, her husband and a friend booked a table for three at 7 pm and ordered Set A, which staff grilled in order (heart, tripe, makchang and daechang), followed by kimchi mari guksu (noodles in cold kimchi broth) and complimentary ice cream. Chodaechang Baekseok Branch is an easygoing Baekseok-dong spot for drinks and conversation with a group.

Sokcho sashimi takeout with no fishy smell, won over a husband: Hoega

Hoega (회가) is a takeout and delivery sashimi restaurant on Beonyeong-ro 43beon-gil in Gyodong, Sokcho, Gangwon, where a couple with 30 years of experience serve mixed sashimi made from seasonal East Sea fish. During a Goseong trip, the writer phoned Hoega ahead and picked up a small mixed sashimi platter and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) for one. The order came with homemade makjang (fermented soybean dipping paste), aged kimchi made by the owner's parents, and mulhoe with sea squirt and abalone, all in generous portions. Even a husband who doesn't like sashimi ate more because there was no fishy smell, making Hoega a must-stop for sashimi takeout on a Sokcho or Goseong trip.

Hwaseong butcher BBQ: beef short rib and guacamole bar, Morakmorak

Morakmorak Jeongyuk Sikdang Namyang Hwaseong City Hall Main Branch is a butcher-style Korean BBQ restaurant in Namyang-eup, Hwaseong, with its own parking lot. On a visit to her older sister, the writer stopped by around 8 p.m., picked gabeulsal (pork neck-to-loin cut), beef short rib meat and raw brisket, had them pre-seared, and enjoyed a self-bar with guacamole and tortillas plus free bone-broth self-serve ramen. The verdict: Morakmorak has the best meat quality of any butcher restaurant the writer has tried.
