Ansan pork rib restaurant on a rainy day: garlic scape side at Suamgol

In short

Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul Ansan Hanyang University Station Branch is a pork rib (jjokgalbi) restaurant on Rodeo Street by Handaeap Station in Ansan that brings the ribs to the table fully cooked. On a heavy-rain weekday the writer ordered garlic and spicy jjokgalbi, then added BBQ jjokgalbi; the free soft tofu stew and the self-bar's hidden garlic scape side dish stood out most. For thick pork ribs you don't have to grill yourself, Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul is a satisfying choice.

Today I was craving golden, juicy grilled pork ribs, so I headed to a well-known meat restaurant near Handaeap Station in Ansan: Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul (수암골 쪽갈비마을) Ansan Hanyang University Station Branch. You don't have to fuss over grilling, because the ribs come out fully cooked, and the generous meatiness keeps customers streaming in. Thick meat, sauces that stick to your taste buds, a cool outdoor-seating vibe and a homey atmosphere, all of it! It poured on the day I went, so I couldn't enjoy the outdoor seats, but the rainy mood was lovely.

What is the atmosphere like at Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul by Handaeap Station?

Indoor hall of Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul Ansan

The hall is spacious, with about 13 tables set at comfortable distances, so you can eat without being bothered by the people around you. Step inside and a bright, tidy, pleasant room greets you. Even though it was early on a weekday, there were lots of customers, so I only photographed part of it!!

Because the ribs are pre-cooked so they're easy to eat, the restaurant itself felt clean, without that stuffy smoke or greasy feel typical of meat restaurants. You just warm up the nicely grilled ribs and eat. That makes it a great choice for a company dinner near Handaeap, a group gathering in Ansan, or a family meal out.

Jjokgalbi menu lineup at Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul

The main menu is a jjokgalbi (pork rib) lineup: garlic, spicy, BBQ and salt ribs. It's put together so people of all ages can enjoy it with no real hits or misses.

  • Garlic jjokgalbi: packed with a sharp, nutty garlic flavor
  • Spicy jjokgalbi: fiery sauce that melts your stress away
  • BBQ jjokgalbi: sweet and salty, a flavor kids like too
  • Salt jjokgalbi: the basic menu item
  • Crazy jjokgalbi: a new, spicier item that isn't on the printed menu but is on the order pad

It's fun to pick around according to your taste. If you like spicy food, I recommend taking on the crazy jjokgalbi.

Fully cooked jjokgalbi at Suamgol Jjokgalbi Maeul

What does it mean that Suamgol's pork ribs come fully cooked?

The biggest draw of Suamgol is that the ribs come not just pre-grilled but fully cooked, ready to eat right away. It takes a little while for the food to come out, but you don't have to wait long in front of a hot grill for the meat to cook. Since the cooked meat is delivered to your table, the meal flows without interruption and it's quick and comfortable. So convenient.

Ordering garlic and spicy jjokgalbi, then adding BBQ

Table spread of ordered garlic and spicy jjokgalbi

This day at Suamgol I first ordered the signature garlic and spicy ribs, and they were so good that I added the sweet BBQ ribs too and had a full feast.

Large jjokgalbi with scissor cuts

Overall the ribs are very large and meaty, and the thick meat comes scored with scissor cuts so it's easy to eat. Using the tongs provided to pick one up, eat the meat, then hold the bone and tear off the rest, nothing got stuck in my teeth or was awkward to pull off, so I could eat comfortably and happily.

Free soft tofu stew in an earthenware pot

How was the free soft tofu stew?

As moving as the main meat was the free soft tofu stew (sundubu-jjigae, soft tofu soup). It comes bubbling in an earthenware pot, and the broth is really rich, spicy and tangy, soothing the stomach with an explosion of savory depth. It arrives right when you order, and I could keep it warm on the dedicated grill alongside the ribs, which was great.

Before the main meat even arrives, this spicy broth alone is a perfect drinking snack that could easily carry a bottle of soju, and a total rice thief too! The harmony of sweet, spicy ribs and tangy stew was the best.

Hidden self-bar sides: garlic scape strips and white kimchi

The self-bar at Suamgol has hidden side dishes that they don't give you at first: garlic chive strips (maneuljjong-chae) and white kimchi. I'd never had the garlic chive strips before, and the texture with the ribs is crazy good! I definitely recommend eating them together, haha.

A piece of sharp garlic jjokgalbi

Garlic vs spicy vs BBQ jjokgalbi: which tasted best?

Of the three, my personal favorite was the spicy ribs. Reviewing the ribs overall: the garlic ribs have a charming sharp garlic bite, so anyone who likes garlic bossam or garlic jokbal (pig's trotters) will definitely love them!

Spicy jjokgalbi with a hot sauce

The spicy ribs' point is the spicy sauce, a pleasantly just-right heat that keeps you reaching for more.

Sweet-and-salty BBQ jjokgalbi added to the order

The BBQ ribs I added were sweet-and-salty, a flavor people of all ages will like. Next time I think I'll get the spicy and BBQ ribs.
