At lunch the writer ordered the signature Yukbaek-i set (pork neck plus pork belly) and the owner-recommended black pork gochujang stew. The owner grilled the thick cuts over the briquettes, and the writer ate them with salt, myeongi (pickled wild garlic leaves) with fresh wasabi, and shiitake mushroom sauce. Heukdwaeji Hyeongjedeul suits family meals and work dinners where you would rather not do the grilling yourself.

Sokcho tofu restaurant: sundubu and spicy biji stew, Daecheongmaru

Daecheongmaru (대청마루) is a hanok-style Korean restaurant on Gwangwang-ro in Sokcho, Gangwon, serving chodang sundubu (soft tofu) and dried pollack dishes. On a very rainy first morning of a family trip, around 8:30 a.m., the family ordered chodang sundubu and pollack hangover soup at Daecheongmaru, and were pleased with the nutty tofu made from Korean-grown soybeans and side dishes such as soy-marinated shrimp, braised half-dried pollack and biji (soybean pulp) stew. Daecheongmaru is a good place for families with kids to enjoy a hearty meal during a Sokcho trip.

Sokcho market's egg vs nurungji squid sundae test: Ddogi-ne Twigim

Ddogi-ne Twigim (서민갑부 똑이네튀김) is a squid sundae (stuffed squid) and fried-food stall on the first floor of the Sokcho Jungang Market arcade in Sokcho, Gangwon. The writer took away a Ddogi-ne Twigim set of egg-coated and nurungji (scorched rice) squid sundae plus a potato pancake, then compared the two textures by the sea about 20 minutes later. Her husband and child preferred the moist egg-coated squid sundae while she picked the chewy nurungji one, so first-timers should order the set with both.

Sokcho market garlic dakgangjeong, Cheonhyehyang juice: Seomin Gapbu

Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip (서민갑부 시장닭집) is a dakgangjeong (sweet, crispy glazed fried chicken) shop inside Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon, best known for its garlic and deodeok (bellflower root) dakgangjeong. The writer queued with her husband and child, cooled off with a Cheonhyehyang (mandarin-type citrus) juice, and found the garlic dakgangjeong a little spicy for the child but loved the big, sauce-soaked garlic cloves. Verdict: order the half-and-half at Seomin Gapbu Sijang Dakjip if you have kids, and the garlic dakgangjeong if you love garlic.

Yangyang BBQ lodging staff picked: fresh ribs with kids, Yeoyejeong

Yeoyejeong (여여정) is a charcoal BBQ restaurant on Ssangsolbaegi-gil in Seomyeon, Yangyang, Gangwon, about 10 minutes by car from lodgings near Naksan Beach. On a tip from their lodging staff, a family came to Yeoyejeong for dinner and ordered 2 servings of fresh ribs (saeng-galbi), pork belly and janchi guksu (banquet noodle soup) for their child. Joining the review event also earned them a toy and a free 150g pork tail. For a meat dinner with kids in Yangyang, Yeoyejeong's fresh ribs are well worth trying.
