Konkuk Univ. pastry bakery on a rainy day: 6 flaky bakes, Stack Bakery
In short
Stack Bakery Konkuk University Station Main Branch (STÄCK) is a two-floor pastry bakery café in an alley near Konkuk Univ. Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. On a rainy weekday afternoon the writer tried six pastries at Stack Bakery: hazelnut kouign-amann, Crookie (croissant cookie), sausage pastry, almond pain suisse, egg flan and red bean butter salt bread, each with layers so flaky that even the sound of the first bite was different. Prices at Stack Bakery run a little high, but the flaky layers and rich flavor make it a croissant spot near Konkuk Univ. worth the money.

I visited Stack Bakery, a bakery café near Konkuk Univ. Station, on a rainy day. I don't know why, but rainy days always make me crave freshly baked bread, haha. I grabbed my umbrella and headed over, and to cut to the chase: I completely fell for the layers of the pastry. The crackling sound is real, I promise! I was also picking up snacks for my kid, so I really went all in today :)
Stack Bakery store info

Stack Bakery (STÄCK) opens at 8 a.m., so it's also a nice stop before work.
Getting to Stack Bakery: parking and waiting
Stack Bakery is a little over 600 m on foot from Exit 5 of Konkuk Univ. Station. Head into the alley and you'll spot a black three-story building with a croissant logo sign on top, which stands out even from far away.
The awning has blue STÄCK lettering with "pastry, dessert, coffee" written underneath, so it's hard not to get curious as you walk past.
There's no parking information. I went by public transport, but if you're driving, it's easier to check nearby paid parking beforehand. Even on a rainy weekday afternoon, there were quite a few customers inside. On weekends, be ready to wait.
Stack Bakery atmosphere and seating

Stack Bakery is split across the first and second floors, and it's more compact than I expected. There are marble tables with wood and leather chairs, plus tall bar seats by the window, so it looks comfortable even if you come alone.

Big picture windows look out onto the alley, and maybe because it was raining, the view through the raindrop-dotted glass felt quite atmospheric. A FLOWER MARKET poster and European dessert illustrations hang on the walls, so it felt like a little European café.

A "Best Croissant in Seoul" poster is proudly stuck up at the entrance, and I heard a foreign chef bakes the pastries himself.

The kitchen is open, so you can see people in aprons shaping dough and carrying bread. That confidence feels pretty trustworthy, right? haha

Stack Bakery menu and how to order

At Stack Bakery you look at the pastries in the showcase and choose them yourself. Stand in front of it and you'll see pain au chocolat, kouign-amann and flat croissants, all with beautifully defined layers, so choosing is half the fun. I got greedy and picked six... my wallet just opened by itself, lol.

6 pastries I tried at Stack Bakery
① Hazelnut kouign-amann
The hazelnut kouign-amann is caramel-crisp outside, with buttery aroma soaking the moist inside. Add the nutty hazelnut flavor and your mood lifts with the first bite.
② Crookie (croissant cookie)

The Crookie is a croissant topped with a cookie. The crunch plus the sweetness is just unfair. It's perfect when you need a sugar boost.
③ Johnsonville sausage pastry
The Johnsonville sausage pastry has salty sausage with mustard sauce, which balances out the sweet pastries. My husband called dibs on it, lol, and devoured it so fast I couldn't get a photo ㅠㅠ
④ Almond pain suisse

The almond pain suisse is packed with almond cream and chocolate chips, as sweet as a dessert, and it was perfect with coffee.
⑤ Egg flan

In the egg flan, the custard melts smoothly, with a rich, nutty egg flavor. It's an easy, crowd-pleasing taste.
⑥ Red bean butter salt bread

The red bean butter salt bread (angbutter sogeumppang) is chewy salt bread with sweet red bean paste and butter. You know that salty-sweet-salty-sweet combo, right? My kid snatched this one away from me.
What all the pastries at Stack Bakery share is that the layers are truly alive. Even the sound when you bite is different. I'm curious about the plain croissant now, so I'll definitely try it next time.
Who I'd recommend Stack Bakery to

I confidently recommend Stack Bakery to all of you.
Would I go back to Stack Bakery? One-line review

I stopped by this café near Konkuk Univ. Station by chance on a rainy day, and the layers alone won me over. The hazelnut kouign-amann especially will stay in my memory for a long time.
Bread with real layers is just different.
It was a day that reminded me of that. Next time I'll probably come again with my kid and husband :)
- Taste ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)
- Price ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)
- Atmosphere ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4.5/5)
- Service ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4.5/5)
Each pastry is a bit pricey, so I held back a little on the price score. Still, considering the layers and flavor, it's absolutely worth it.
