Sokcho Beach pizzeria: a sand picnic with a kid, Gagas Pizza

In short

Gagas Pizza is a retro-style pizzeria selling pizza by the slice in Sokcho, Gangwon, a 2–3 minute walk from Sokcho Beach. After eating White Mushroom, Super Combo and Hawaiian slices at Gagas Pizza, the writer boxed a few more slices for a picnic with a kid on the sand at Sokcho Beach. Going from a sit-down meal at Gagas Pizza straight to a beach picnic was the best moment of the Sokcho trip.

A 2-minute walk from Sokcho Beach, and slice pizza this good almost felt unfair. This is my story of Gagas Pizza in Sokcho 🍕

Honestly, I never planned to eat pizza in Sokcho. Snow crab, dakgangjeong (Korean fried chicken), a bowl of mulhoe (spicy cold raw fish soup): that's the official Sokcho route, right? But walking near Sokcho Beach, one shop caught my eye from the outside. A retro interior that looked like it was lifted whole from somewhere in America. A "Slice" sign at the entrance. I couldn't just walk past.

Is Gagas Pizza's atmosphere OK for kids?

Gagas Pizza has retro mid-century touches and a roomy, relaxed seating layout, so it's no burden at all to walk in with a child while traveling. I didn't expect to find a space like this in Sokcho.

The 2nd floor up the stairs is the highlight. Big windows open up the view, so you see the outside while you eat. If you want to take your time at a seat with a view, grab a 2nd-floor spot first. 🪟

There's also a self-serve bar on one side. You can take as many pickles and jalapeños as you like with no awkwardness, and details like that quietly make you happy.

How many Gagas Pizza slices make a meal?

Gagas Pizza's biggest feature is that it sells pizza by the slice rather than the whole pie. Each slice is quite hefty, and two or three were plenty for a meal. I never knew selling by the slice could be so appealing!

You can pick just the flavors you want without having to order a whole pie, so solo travelers and families with kids are both comfortable. Don't assume "slice" means small.

And above all, the dough. Chewy to bite, with the edge still crisp, like real pizza in America. It's the kind of bread that makes you finish the crust without leaving any behind. 😋

🍄 White Mushroom slice: pick of the day

Gagas Pizza's White Mushroom slice has a smooth, rich white cream sauce instead of tomato sauce, topped generously with mushrooms. It truly beat my expectations. Mushroom aroma fills your mouth with every bite, and it tastes so upscale you wonder, "Is this pizza or pasta?"

There's a faint hint of truffle that isn't overpowering, so if you like cream pasta or mushroom dishes, you'll fall for it. It was by far my top pick of the three.

🥓 Super Combo slice: the classic done right

The Super Combo slice has pepperoni, meat, crunchy vegetables and cheese in an ideal ratio, and the tomato sauce's tang with the salty cheese feels just like authentic American pizza. You can judge a pizzeria by its most basic item, right?

It satisfies everyone with no divided opinions, so if you're in a group or it's your first visit, you should definitely order one.

🍍 Hawaiian slice: it won me over, surprisingly

On the Hawaiian slice, big pieces of sweet pineapple sit on salty toppings, and the sweet-and-salty balance is much better than I expected. Truthfully, I don't usually eat pineapple pizza, but this one was different.

Just when it starts to feel greasy, the pineapple resets your mouth, so I finished to the last slice without getting tired of it. Even if you thought you couldn't eat Hawaiian pizza, it's worth trying once. 👍

Gagas Pizza tip: ranch sauce + coleslaw combo

At Gagas Pizza, dip the hot, freshly baked pizza generously in ranch sauce and top it with a spoonful of coleslaw. It turns into a completely different flavor.

The pizza tastes twice as rich, so it'd be a real shame to go without knowing this combo. Add the self-serve bar jalapeños and a can of beer disappears automatically. 🍺

Boxing Gagas Pizza for a Sokcho Beach picnic: the real highlight of the day

Gagas Pizza does takeout, so after eating in the shop you can box a few more slices and carry them straight to Sokcho Beach. We'd eaten all three kinds in the shop, but I still wanted more. When I asked, "Can I get a few more slices to go?", they packed them neatly into a box.

Then I took my kid's hand and headed straight to Sokcho Beach. The moment the shoes came off, the kid pushed both feet into the sand and got busy building sandcastles. With the sound of waves as background, I opened the pizza box and picked up a slice, and thought, this is what traveling is.

It was good in the restaurant too, but eating it in the sea breeze tasted different again. After a long time playing in the sand, my kid came over, dusting off their hands, and said, "I want a bite too," and that moment was the best of this Sokcho trip. 😊

Gagas Pizza → Sokcho Beach picnic: I think I'd do the exact same thing next time I'm in Sokcho. 🌊

Who would we recommend Gagas Pizza to?

If you want something different from seafood on your Sokcho trip, or a place you can walk into easily with a kid, I sincerely recommend Gagas Pizza as a good eat near Sokcho Beach.

  • Sold by the slice, so you eat only as much as you want
  • Chewy dough with a crisp edge
  • The calm of eating at a 2nd-floor window seat
  • A route that goes from takeout to a Sokcho Beach picnic

Finding a place like this in Sokcho was a small stroke of luck. 🍕✨
