Halibut and rockfish sashimi spread packed as takeout from Ilchul Hoetjip in Jumunjin

On any trip to Gangneung, sashimi ends up on the table more than once, haha. This time I wanted to eat comfortably at my stay, so while looking for a sashimi restaurant in Jumunjin, I picked up a takeout order from Ilchul Hoetjip inside Jumunjin Fish Market.

The set I chose was halibut + rockfish sashimi, which came together with sea squirt, whelk, abalone, steamed shrimp, steamed scallops, and basic vegetables. It wasn't just sashimi on its own — a whole variety of seafood was packed in too, perfect for laying out at the stay.

Ilchul Hoetjip is located at 4 Sijang 2-gil, Jumunjin-eup, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do. If you're driving, it's easiest to search for Jumunjin Coastal Parking Tower on your navigation.

After parking, you cross the street into the alley of Jumunjin Fish Market, and it's the third shop on the right — easier to find than I expected. Since Jumunjin is right by the market, I was worried about parking at first, but with the parking tower available it was actually a convenient sashimi restaurant to visit by car. By the way, the store can also help with parking support, so check when you pay.

Business hours run from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and until 9:30 PM on Saturdays. Eating right at the restaurant is possible too, but if you'd rather eat comfortably at your stay like I did, you can order takeout through Naver Reservation.

While traveling it's often hard to time a visit exactly, so ordering ahead and just picking up was definitely convenient. If you're after a popular sashimi restaurant in Jumunjin, booking ahead seems like a good idea!

Inside Ilchul Hoetjip and the menu

While waiting for takeout, I looked around inside, and it was bigger than I expected. It has that cozy market-restaurant feel, but seating is generous and it can reportedly seat over 150 people.

It looked like a good spot for family trips or group gatherings too. The menu goes beyond sashimi to pufferfish sashimi, pufferfish soup, snow crab, red crab, king crab, large amberjack, and spicy fish stew, so it's worth noting for anyone searching for a snow crab or king crab restaurant in Jumunjin too.

The halibut + rockfish sashimi takeout set

This time we picked the halibut + rockfish sashimi takeout instead of snow crab. Opening it up, along with the halibut and rockfish there was also sea squirt, whelk, abalone, steamed shrimp, and steamed scallops — a much more generous spread than expected.

They even packed basic vegetables including lettuce, so there was almost nothing extra to prepare at the stay. Eating out is nice, but on a tired travel day, packing sashimi from a Jumunjin restaurant and eating comfortably at the stay is genuinely great too!

A sashimi spread laid out at the stay

Once we got to the stay and laid everything out piece by piece, it stopped feeling like a single takeout plate and became a proper full spread. Switching between halibut and rockfish meant it was less tiring than eating just one type, and having the vegetables packed together made wraps easy too.

Eating it plain with soy sauce and a bit of wasabi mixed in, then dipping into chojang (vinegar-chili sauce), then piling lettuce with garlic on top — it disappeared in no time, haha. If you're looking for sashimi to enjoy with a drink at your stay, this kind of takeout set was a pretty good choice.

The seafood that came alongside

I tried each of the seafood items that came with the sashimi too. With whelk, abalone, steamed shrimp, and steamed scallops all there, it was fun to pick through the variety.

Eating only sashimi for a while sometimes makes you crave a different texture, and having several kinds of seafood on hand made the whole spread feel much richer. Since we'd come all the way to the sea, I wanted to eat a bit of everything, and this was exactly the kind of set I was hoping for.

How did the sashimi texture hold up after transport?

Both the halibut and rockfish looked glossy and were neatly prepared. Most of all, even after being packed and carried to the stay, the texture hadn't gone soft at all — it stayed nice and springy, which was very satisfying.

The halibut had a soft yet chewy feel I liked, while the rockfish was a bit firmer, so switching between the two was fun. It really felt worth it to have made the trip to a Jumunjin sashimi restaurant for takeout.

If you want to eat sashimi at your stay

Eating straight at the restaurant is nice while traveling, but relaxing at your stay and laying out a full sashimi spread is another kind of fun. Ilchul Hoetjip's set came with seafood alongside the halibut and rockfish, so there was nothing extra to buy separately, and the nearby parking tower made pickup convenient.

Since they also handle snow crab, red crab, and king crab beyond sashimi, next time I'd like to sit down properly at the restaurant when looking for a snow crab or king crab restaurant in Jumunjin. If you want to enjoy fresh sashimi comfortably at your stay during a Gangneung trip, try picking up takeout from Ilchul Hoetjip, a sashimi restaurant in Jumunjin.
