Sashimi takeaway walk to Jumunjin Fish Market: Minja Hoetjip
In short
Minja Hoetjip is a live fish and snow crab restaurant inside Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung, Gangwon. We walked there from our lodging and packed a medium mixed sashimi platter, which came with three sauces, side dishes, and a bonus of sea squirt and abalone, plenty for two people. If you want to enjoy sashimi at your lodging during a Jumunjin trip, takeaway from Minja Hoetjip was very satisfying.

While looking for a good sashimi takeaway spot in Jumunjin, I visited Minja Hoetjip inside Jumunjin Fish Market, near our lodging.

While planning our trip to Jumunjin in Gangneung, I looked for a sashimi takeaway spot we could enjoy comfortably at our lodging, and heard this place sold a wide variety of fresh seafood, so we decided to visit. My husband and I parked the car at our lodging and walked to Jumunjin Fish Market for dinner.

Walking to Jumunjin Fish Market

It wasn't far from our lodging, so it was nice to walk over like a stroll with the sea breeze, and the lively atmosphere around the market made it fun to look around. We stopped by the lighthouse on the way and looked around the neighborhood, which felt kind of like a date, haha.

For those visiting by car, the Jumunjin Coastal Parking Tower offers 1 hour of free parking, so that's worth keeping in mind. Minja Hoetjip, the restaurant we visited, is inside Jumunjin Fish Market and sells not only live fish sashimi but also snow crab, king crab, and various other seafood.

Picking seafood right from the tanks
True to a fish market, the seafood in the tanks looked really fresh, and I liked being able to see and pick exactly what I wanted. While we waited for our order, my heart was pounding — was it because of the sashimi, or the excitement of finally traveling again?!?!

Is dine-in possible too?
Anyone looking for a sashimi restaurant in Jumunjin, Gangneung probably cares about freshness and menu variety, and this place was satisfying on both counts. Minja Hoetjip isn't just for takeaway — it's a Jumunjin sashimi restaurant where you can dine in as well. With a main building and a separate annex, it also looked like a good spot for family gatherings.

If you dine in, the table setting, spicy fish stew, and the fee for steamed crab are all free, so if you'd rather eat right away, dining in seems like a good option too. This time, we decided to eat comfortably at our lodging, so we packed a medium mixed sashimi platter. While it was being packed, we could watch the sashimi being prepared, and the appetizing fish neatly arranged raised our expectations even more.

Opening the medium mixed sashimi platter at our lodging
Back at our lodging, when we opened the takeaway container, the sashimi and side dishes were neatly packed, and the portion was more than enough for two. It came with three-color sauces, which was so convenient and nice!!! But be careful when opening it!!! Everything can splash out :)

We had it with beer, and the sashimi was really fresh and chewy, so it went great with the drinks!!!

It was clean with no fishy taste, and had a subtle sweetness that grew stronger the more we chewed, so our chopsticks kept going back for more.

Sea squirt, abalone on the house, and the owner's generosity
Eating comfortably at our lodging made for a great atmosphere and was the perfect special dinner for our trip. On top of that, the owner threw in my favorite sea squirt and abalone as a service. The sea squirt had that distinct fragrant sea aroma still alive in it, and the abalone was chewy too, both delicious alongside the sashimi. It was unexpected, so it made us even happier, and the owner treated us so kindly that even on our first visit it felt comfortable. Above all, the owner's generosity made for a really pleasant Jumunjin sashimi takeaway experience.
If you're looking for fresh sashimi to eat at your lodging during a trip to Jumunjin in Gangneung, or scouting sashimi restaurants at Jumunjin Fish Market, Minja Hoetjip is worth a visit. It's good for dining in, and just as satisfying for taking out and enjoying leisurely at your lodging like we did.
