Mangwon Japanese restaurant for egg-yolk mazesoba and sake-don: Padong
In short
Padong is a Japanese restaurant on the basement level of a building in Mangwon-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, decorated in a warm Japanese style. The signature futomaki (thick sushi roll) was unavailable because the tuna had sold out, so the meal was mazesoba (mixed noodles), sake-don (salmon rice bowl), a steak rice bowl, karaage (fried chicken) and fried shrimp, and the mazesoba stirred together with thick sauce and egg yolk was the standout. Padong stays quiet enough that solo diners and anyone wanting a calm meal will feel comfortable.

A place with atmosphere written all over it from the outside in — here's my honest review of Padong 🍣

What is the atmosphere like inside Padong in Mangwon-dong?
The moment I arrived in front of Padong, what caught my eye was the cozy, distinctly Japanese-style exterior 🏡 The warm wooden feel radiating from outside already put me in a good mood before I even walked in ✨

Stepping inside, there was a quiet yet comfortable atmosphere throughout, making it a genuinely nice space for a relaxed meal 🪑 The staff greeted me warmly, and the seats were so comfortable I stayed happily until I finished eating 👍

Futomaki tuna sold out: what we ordered at Padong instead
I visited with high expectations since Padong's signature menu items are futomaki (thick seaweed roll) and mazesoba 💡 Unfortunately, when I visited, I was told the tuna for the popular futomaki had run out and it couldn't be ordered 🥺

It was a little disappointing, since it seems to sell out early because it's so popular, but I made the most of it and ordered the other signature, mazesoba, along with sake-don (salmon rice bowl) and a steak rice bowl. It actually worked out well since I got to enjoy a variety of rice bowls and noodle dishes 😋

How does the mazesoba at Padong taste?
The mazesoba I tried first was so much better than expected that I was completely surprised from the first bite 💥 Popping the yellow egg yolk into the thick, umami-packed sauce and mixing it through the noodles created an absolutely wonderful combination ✨
The noodles themselves were plump and cooked just right, keeping a chewy texture that really shone through. I was so into it that I emptied the bowl in no time — thoroughly satisfied. If you visit Padong, I definitely recommend trying the mazesoba; the balance between the toppings and sauce is truly excellent 🤤

Is the sake-don at Padong good for solo dining?
Next up, the sake-don had salmon on top that looked incredibly fresh just from the visual alone 🍣 The salmon's characteristic savory, soft texture really came through, and after finishing the bowl, a satisfying fullness set in 🍚
Since it comes plated so neatly and cleanly, it's a great option for an easy, filling meal in the middle of a busy day 🥢 The whole atmosphere of the restaurant is relaxed, so I felt it would be totally comfortable and enjoyable to visit alone for solo dining 🙋♀️

How is the steak rice bowl served?
The steak rice bowl I tried next came with meat cooked close to well-done, so even those who feel uneasy about rare meat can enjoy it comfortably 🥩 The meat was cooked fairly thoroughly, giving it a clean, mild texture 🌾
On top of savory rice mixed with sweet soy sauce and egg yolk, a piece of steak was placed, and with a little fresh wasabi added, the spicy kick and sweetness went together perfectly 💚 The sharp aroma of the wasabi blended with the mild meat for an even richer flavor 😋

Sides at Padong: karaage and fried shrimp
To go along with the main dishes, I also ordered karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and fried shrimp as sides. They came out freshly fried, still steaming and piping hot 🔥
From the first bite, they were the textbook example of crispy outside, juicy inside — I would have been sorry not to order them as sides. The batter was so crisp that even the crunch sounded delicious 🍤 The karaage in particular was salty yet tender inside, genuinely impressive. It's great as a meal item, but I imagine it would also be perfect paired with a cold beer 🍺

Final verdict on Padong: who should go?
Overall, it was a satisfying time enjoying neatly prepared Japanese food within a cozy, warm interior full of genuine Japanese atmosphere 🌸 Thanks to the friendly service and comfortable seating, I was able to fully enjoy a relaxed mood throughout the meal 🪑
The combination of the mazesoba with its excellent thick sauce, the fresh sake-don, and the crispy karaage was really impressive. I'd gently recommend Padong to anyone who wants a neat solo meal with freshly fried dishes and a rice bowl, or a quiet, delicious meal with a partner or friend ✨
