Rainy-day daechang hot pot in Dongtan: ₩4,000 risotto at Horangigul

Today I'm introducing Horangigul (호랑이굴) in Lotte Department Store Dongtan, which I visited on a day I was craving a hot, spicy broth dish. It happened to be raining, so warm soup felt extra tempting. ☔

I didn't feel like cooking at home and wanted a proper meal, so I headed straight to Horangigul, where the main dish is offal hot pot (gopchang jeongol). A spicy hot pot on a rainy day is the best, isn't it? I was looking forward to plenty of offal and rich broth. Here's my honest review!

Horangigul is on the B1 floor of Lotte Department Store Dongtan. It's close to my home, so I often stop by just to look around. The B1 floor in particular swaps its pop-ups regularly, so there's always something new to see, which is why I keep coming back. 😊

There are quite a lot of seats once you go further inside. We took a table near the entrance.

There are plenty of seats further in, but a lot of people were eating, so I couldn't take photos. T_T

Since it's a hot pot place, aprons are provided too!

How to order at Horangigul Dongtan and what's on the menu

You order on the tablet placed at each table. We first ordered the main dish, daechang hot pot (beef intestine hot pot) for two, plus rice. The tablet made it easy to browse the menu, and since it was a rainy day, I was even more excited for the spicy hot pot. 😊

Looking through the menu, there are also a variety of rice bowls (deopbap) besides the hot pot. If a hot pot feels like too much or you just want a quick meal, a rice bowl seems like a good choice. It works for solo meals or lunch too, and I liked having such a wide range of options.

Why you should save broth from Horangigul's daechang hot pot

Broth can't be refilled at Horangigul Dongtan, so if you want risotto or add-on noodles after the hot pot, you have to leave some broth. After a short wait, the tempting daechang hot pot came out quickly, and the staff told us about this right away.

We planned to order risotto after the meal, so we left a bit of broth as we ate. 😊 Because we were told in advance, we could enjoy it to the very end. If you're planning on risotto, definitely keep this in mind!

Is there enough daechang in Horangigul's hot pot?

The daechang hot pot is packed with daechang, so there was no need to ration it. See the daechang? They look so plump that they caught my eye the moment the pot arrived. 🤤

Sometimes you order daechang hot pot and only a few pieces are in there, so you end up eating them one by one, right? Horangigul gives you a generous amount, and I was really satisfied. The rich daechang went so well with the spicy broth, and the nutty flavor spread the more I chewed. It lived up to being the main dish.

Horangigul's cheese risotto, stir-fried at your table

For the cheese risotto, staff add rice and cheese to the leftover hot pot broth and stir-fry it right at your table. After we finished eating and ordered it, a staff member came over and cooked it for us, and the wait turned into a bit of fun too. 😊

The nutty smell of cheese spread and it looked so appetizing. The richness of the cheese added to the spicy broth was a perfect way to end the meal, and if you have the hot pot, I recommend getting the risotto too. It was a course that satisfied me down to the last bite!

How big is the 4,000-won cheese risotto?

The cheese risotto is ₩4,000 and comes with almost 2 bowls' worth of rice, enough for two people to share. I was surprised once by the price and again by the portion. 😊

I expected a small side dish, but the portion was really hearty. There was plenty of cheese too, with a lovely nutty flavor, and combined with the spicy hot pot broth it was the perfect finish. If stopping at just the hot pot feels a bit lacking, I recommend filling up with the ₩4,000 cheese risotto!

Would I go back to Horangigul in Lotte Dongtan?

From the daechang hot pot to the cheese risotto, I could eat so much that Horangigul Lotte Dongtan felt like a place to revisit on rainy days. After the hot pot and cheese risotto, I was about to burst. 😂 From the main dish to the finishing dish, it felt like a really filling meal.

When I went to pay, I liked the small touch of candy set out on one side of the counter. Having one as a mouth freshener left my mouth feeling clean, and it ended the meal on a pleasant note. haha~

With its hearty hot pot and nutty risotto, Horangigul Lotte Dongtan is a place I'd go back to, not only on rainy days but whenever I'm craving a warm broth dish. 😊
