Birthday meal at a Jungmun, Jeju Korean restaurant: Godeungeo Ssam-bap

In short

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant serving mackerel ssam-bap (rice with leafy wraps) in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju, set beside a 3,500-pyeong rose garden. For a birthday meal for two, the writer ordered the two-person set of braised mackerel with aged kimchi and abalone stone-pot rice for 36,000 won, added abalone and sea urchin seaweed soup and mild Hallasan soju, and especially liked the self-serve bar with stir-fried pork, japchae and sikhye. Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is recommended if you want garden photos and a generous, good-value Korean meal in one visit.

Jeju's local mackerel ssam-bap, plus a 3,500-pyeong rose garden

Mackerel ssam-bap (grilled or braised mackerel wrapped in lettuce) is apparently one of Jeju's local dishes ~ once you're tired of hairtail, sashimi and black pork on a Jeju trip, this is where you go for mackerel ssam-bap ~~ but this place also has a 3,500-pyeong rose garden!!

The Jungmun rose garden spreading out under a clear sky

Even under the hottest Jeju sun, this 3,500-pyeong flower garden is huge — a photo op is mandatory ~~ the sky and flowers came out so vivid in the pictures haha. Photos are what's left after a trip, so if you're looking for places to visit in Jeju, you have to come here!!

A Jeju breakfast spot that's been on TV, with no break time

It's been featured as a Jeju breakfast spot on MBC's Live Tonight, and on Saturday's Rice Is Good, Hibab and Park Myung-soo came together — the walls are covered with celebrity autographs haha.

Interior with a spacious hall and picture-window seating

The great thing is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has no break time, so you can get delicious mackerel ssam-bap any time! The main hall is spacious and there's a separate annex too — a genuinely big-scale place worth visiting in Jeju haha.

Lucky Sunny (the writer) got a seat by the picture window overlooking the rose garden — extra exciting!!

Ordering a birthday set: ₩36,000 with abalone sea urchin soup and Hallasan soju

The braised mackerel with old kimchi plus abalone stone-pot rice, two-person portion, is ₩36,000 — great value even by Jeju prices!!

It happened to be Lucky Sunny's birthday, so we went all out: the two-person set of braised mackerel with old kimchi and abalone stone-pot rice, plus abalone sea urchin seaweed soup and mild Hallasan soju, for the two of us.

Once you order, the basic side dishes come out like this...

Stir-fried pork, japchae, sikhye and more: the self-serve bar at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap

What's amazing about Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is that the self-serve bar is just the best ~~

There are namul-style side dishes, and since it's a ssam-bap place there's a huge variety of wrap vegetables. Stir-fried pork, japchae, even sikhye (sweet rice drink) — the self-serve bar lineup is insane haha.

And the reason Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is famous as a Jeju breakfast spot: if you come between 9am and 12pm and use a Naver Place coupon, you can even get abalone porridge at the self-serve bar haha. Don't buy abalone porridge for the kids elsewhere ^^ come here to Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap and eat it ~~

Even just grabbing a few side dishes I wanted from the self-serve bar, the sheer number of items was insane haha.

The full spread: braised mackerel with old kimchi and abalone stone-pot rice

A little while later, the abalone pot rice, braised mackerel with old kimchi, and abalone sea urchin seaweed soup all arrived — a truly generous spread!!

My husband said we had to come here — maybe because it makes for a perfect birthday spread haha.

The old kimchi comes out whole for hygiene, so just cut it with scissors and eat! And when it comes to Jeju, mackerel really shines — the braised mackerel needs no explanation haha.

Wrapping abalone pot rice and mackerel together in a lettuce leaf makes for a really healthy yet delicious meal haha.

Abalone stone-pot rice with gosiraegi and hijiki

The abalone pot rice is loaded with gosiraegi (seaweed), hijiki, abalone, and even zucchini — the kind of place even parents would love.

Birthday drinks had to be Hallasan soju haha. A satisfying sip haha.

A bowl of abalone sea urchin seaweed soup

Abalone sea urchin seaweed soup was something I tried for the first time here at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap, and the broth was insanely refreshing ~~ pairs perfectly with soju too!!

To finish, they pour water into the stone pot to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea) — that was the perfect ending haha.

In summary

Taking photo-worthy shots in a massive rose garden and eating great-value braised mackerel with old kimchi — Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is officially a place worth visiting in Jeju!!
