Why I went to Jongga Mandu in Jongno 3-ga on a rainy-and-not-rainy day
Jongga Mandu (종가만두) is a Korean restaurant near Jongno 3-ga Station that serves handmade dumpling hot pot. The weather was so moody that I craved something hot and brothy, so on the day I met a friend in Jongno, we went to Jongga Mandu for its handmade dumpling hot pot (mandu jeongol) for lunch.

☔ The weather has been so unpredictable lately, and when a cool breeze blows, don't you strangely start thinking of a hot, deeply flavored soup? It rained a little and then stopped again today. Honestly, the weather is moodiness itself!!
On top of that, I'd been eating nothing but strong, spicy delivery food lately, so my stomach felt bloated and I was desperate for a hearty meal made with real care ( ͡• ͜ʖ ͡• )

I didn't want another predictable dish loaded with artificial seasoning. I was missing that local, homestyle cooking that leaves your stomach feeling calm after you eat...

I happened to have plans to meet a friend near Jongno, and while picking a lunch spot, I found a place that hit my taste exactly, the kind of restaurant you'd call the meal of your life.

Jongno is full of old, long-running eateries and hidden gems, so choosing is a job in itself, but I fell for Jongga Mandu the moment I saw how it looked.

Getting to Jongga Mandu and the atmosphere inside
Jongga Mandu is not far from Jongno 3-ga Station, so it was easy to find. The inside was homey and neatly kept, with no fuss.
The moment I spotted the friendly-looking sign from afar, I felt certain: "This place is the real deal."
When I opened the door, the homey yet tidy interior came into view at once. The tables were clean with nothing sticky, and the owner greeted us with a kind smile, so I felt as relaxed as if I were visiting Grandma's house after a long time.

Still plenty of customers after the lunch rush
Jongga Mandu is already well known by word of mouth among office workers and locals nearby. We came a little after the lunch rush, yet quite a few diners were still there, and I felt oddly proud that we'd picked the right place.
If you like food that sticks to the basics and has depth, rather than flashy techniques or strongly seasoned sauces, I think you'll fall for this place.

Half-and-half hot pot (banban jeongol)!!! It felt like a place where one visit makes it obvious why everyone becomes a regular, so my expectations shot up before we even ate.

Jongga Mandu handmade dumpling hot pot: how is the broth?
The heart of Jongga Mandu's handmade dumpling hot pot is its clear, clean broth drawn from vegetables and meat. It was generously loaded with big handmade dumplings, fresh vegetables and mushrooms, so it looked hearty even before it started boiling.
At a place you've tracked down properly like this, you have to start with the signature dish, right?

I ordered the handmade dumpling hot pot! Before long, a big hot pot appeared on the table, and the clear, rich aroma of the broth hit my nose right away.
The dumplings in the pot were really big, and you could see with your own eyes that they were packed full. Maybe because they're handmade every day, they're clearly a different class from factory-made dumplings.
They were neatly shaped and pretty too, so you could feel the care just by looking. Fresh vegetables and mushrooms were added without holding back, so it was seriously generous even before boiling.
Wow, I honestly exclaimed out loud. There was nothing harsh or stuffy about it, and the deep, clean flavor from the vegetables and meat was truly a work of art.

As the hot, refreshing broth went down my throat, it felt like all the built-up fatigue and stress were melting away.
Juicy handmade dumplings with chewy wrappers
I carefully scooped out a well-cooked handmade dumpling and split it in half with my spoon, and juices flowed out moistly. A mild, nutty aroma spread, and I was already happy before taking a bite.
The wrapper was chewy, and the texture of the meat and vegetables inside stayed alive, so the more I chewed, the nuttier it tasted!
Best of all, it wasn't greasy or harsh, so even though I usually get sick of dumplings after just a few, I kept reaching for more. The base broth itself is so clean that there was no time to get tired of it, and I ended up finishing every last drop. It was an irresistible kind of flavor.

How does Jongga Mandu's geotjeori kimchi go with the hot pot?
The geotjeori kimchi (freshly seasoned kimchi) served as a side dish at Jongga Mandu went really well with the handmade dumpling hot pot. Its crisp, refreshing savoriness added to the clear broth.
They say you can tell a cook's skill from the kimchi alone. At Jongga Mandu even the kimchi is delicious, so it made a perfect pairing with the hot pot.

A stomach tired of delivery food: how I felt after Jongga Mandu
Even after eating, the handmade dumpling hot pot at Jongga Mandu didn't weigh on my stomach at all. It filled me up while feeling like healthy nourishment, so after the meal both body and mind felt much calmer. It's a place I'll definitely think of when I'm tired of strongly flavored food, like these days.

Best of all, it didn't feel heavy afterward, so even my picky friend enjoyed it a lot haha

It filled me up while giving me a good dose of healthy nourishment, so after finishing I felt pleasantly drowsy and properly restored.

It's a place where you can finish a great meal comfortably with no stomach upset, so next time I plan to bring my parents for a family meal and stamp my attendance at Jongga Mandu again.
