Dongtan Chinese restaurant for a heatwave: icy cold jjamppong, Bultina

In short

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a Chinese-Korean restaurant specialising in cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) in the Namgwangjang eatery alley in Dongtan, Hwaseong. On a sweltering day, the summer-only cold jjamppong, jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and fried dumplings came with ice floating in the broth, plenty of seafood and vegetables, and the same savoury jjamppong depth. In summer, the cold jjamppong alone is reason enough to visit Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch.

Hello :) On days as sweltering as these, I crave something cold more than a hot soup. I heard that Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch, a well-known jjamppong spot in Dongtan, was selling cold jjamppong as a summer-only menu item, so I went to try it.

I ordered jajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce) and fried dumplings along with the cold jjamppong and had a hearty meal, and it was better than I expected. The restaurant is in the Namgwangjang eatery alley, so it wasn't hard to find.

When mealtime came, office workers and families kept walking in, which made me think, yep, this really is a Dongtan jjamppong favorite. The spicy jjamppong smell drifting out from the front of the shop whetted my appetite. Parking is easy too, since you can use the public parking lots nearby, so visiting felt no hassle at all.

Summer-only cold jjamppong: how is it different from cold noodles?

Cold jjamppong

This was the dish I was most looking forward to, and it looked refreshing from the first glance.

Topped with fresh vegetables, it feels like the heat melts away just from looking at it~

I tried the broth first, and it has a charm totally different from ordinary cold noodles.

Tasting the cold jjamppong broth

It keeps the deep savory richness jjamppong is known for while finishing cool and clean, so I kept going back for more.

The spiciness is just right too, so I really recommend it as a summer treat :)

Jajangmyeon noodles and sauce

The jajangmyeon was better than expected too.

Jajangmyeon

The noodles were chewy and the sauce was generous, so I could mix and enjoy it to the very end.

Mixing jajangmyeon with its generous sauce

It's not just sweet black bean sauce; it has a nutty, rich flavor that kids and adults alike would love!

Alternating it with the cold jjamppong was a really great combination.

Should you order the fried dumplings too?

The fried dumplings (gunmandu) are crispy outside and moist inside, and one bite bursts with juice.

They're good on their own, and even better with the jajang sauce or the cold jjamppong broth.

It's a side dish, but I do recommend ordering it.

The summer-only cold jjamppong in particular has a charm different from the cold noodles you usually eat, and it suited the hot weather perfectly.

The jajangmyeon and fried dumplings were satisfying too, so next time I plan to come back for the signature cockle jjamppong. If you like a fiery broth, I'd also recommend it as a Dongtan hangover-cure spot.
