Daegu Korean restaurant for salt-dipped oven mackerel: Geumdeungeo

Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch (금등어 달서구 직영점) is a Korean restaurant serving oven-grilled mackerel and pot rice set meals on the 3rd floor of Jincheon Mat Town in Dalseo, Daegu. At an early lunch on a rainy weekday, the writer ordered the Geumdeungeo pot rice set meal for 3 with their parents, and dipping the unseasoned oven-grilled mackerel in salt made them eat more than their usual half bowl of rice. With a tidy self-serve banchan bar, kkotseolgi (flower rice cake) and after-meal drinks, Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch is a good set-meal restaurant for taking parents out.

Daemyeong-dong Korean holiday lunch: smoky bulgogi set, Cafe Dongi

Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch is a Korean set-meal (hanjeongsik) restaurant in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, near Exit 1 of Daemyeong Station. On the first day of a holiday, the writer and their parents had lunch there: the fire-grilled jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) set, the Dongi bulgogi set, the crispy whole-shrimp Japanese curry tray and a mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork). The smoky Dongi bulgogi set was the family favorite. Neat full trays in the ₩10,000 range make Cafe Dongi Daemyeong Station Branch a good choice for both family meals and eating alone.

Daegu peanut bread shop, egg bread split with Mom: Daesin Peanut Bread

Daesin Peanut Bread is a peanut bread and egg bread shop in Seomun Market (Keunjang-ro 26-gil, Jung-gu, Daegu). The writer parked with Mom at the Seomun Parking Building public car park, bought 45 peanut breads and 2 egg breads on a weekday with no wait, and tasted a peanut latte and freshly baked peanut bread. Daesin Peanut Bread is a good snack stop on a Seomun Market outing, especially if you plan your parking route.

Daegu salt-grilled pork BBQ with king oyster mushroom wraps: Ttukbang

Ttukbang (뚝방) is a salt-grilled pork BBQ restaurant on Goseong-ro in Goseong-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu, where staff grill the pork neck and pork belly for you from the first sear and cut it. Over 2 servings of salt-grilled pork neck, 2 servings of salt-grilled pork belly and a spicy doenjang (soybean paste) stew, the writer built king oyster mushroom wraps with pork belly, pickled onion and white kimchi, and Ttukbang refunded the 2,100 won DGB Park parking fee right after one text message. Ttukbang's strong air conditioning keeps the grill table cool, but the room is loud enough that conversation is hard to hear.
