Mild and spicy kalguksu shared in Jung-gu, Daegu: Donggok Jemyeon
In short
Donggok Jemyeon Daegu Dongseong-ro Main Branch is a house-made noodle kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant on Gukchebosang-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu. On a rainy day, two of us ordered the hanwoo (Korean beef) bone kalguksu, the yukgaejang kalguksu and the seafood chive pancake, and finished every bite of the rich bone broth, the salted-seafood kimchi and the pancake that was crisp outside and soft inside. Donggok Jemyeon is an easy Dongseong-ro Korean restaurant for splitting one mild bowl and one spicy bowl.

On a day when the rain was pouring down, and rainy days make me think of kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup)!! So we visited Donggok Jemyeon, a Dongseong-ro Korean restaurant that makes its own noodles in-house. I'd always been curious since it's packed every time I pass by, and today the weather was just perfect for it!!
Finding Donggok Jemyeon in downtown Daegu, and where to park

This place is right near Daegu City Hall, so since we visited on a weekend we could use the city hall parking lot for free! Otherwise, Donggok Jemyeon supports 30 minutes of parking at the Dongseong-ro parking lot, a 3-minute walk away, so that's worth knowing.

Maybe because it was rainy and the temperature dropped, it felt even more crowded than usual? The customers' ages were really varied too.
Inside Donggok Jemyeon: seating and atmosphere

It's a kalguksu restaurant, but the atmosphere is really nice — isn't eating kalguksu while watching the rain fall just perfect?

Since it was so crowded, I snapped photos in between people leaving. There were 4-seat and 2-seat tables spread evenly, and even though the space wasn't huge, the seating was arranged well enough to fit a lot of people.

A sign said they use fresh ingredients and cook hygienically, with the mindset of feeding their own family — seeing that posted up gives you extra confidence.

You order through the tablet sitting on the table.
The Donggok Jemyeon menu and what two people ordered on a rainy day
The menu was really clean and simple. There were set menus too, and a nice variety of kalguksu types.
- Hanwoo (Korean beef) bone kalguksu
- Yukgaejang kalguksu
- Seafood chive pancake
The perfect combo for a rainy day.

It's so nice when they bring out the whole menu at once like this. Perfect for photos ෆ

The visuals were insane. The kalguksu in a big bowl and the pancake on a wide plate both looked incredibly appetizing.

Hanwoo bone kalguksu: house-made noodles in a gomtang-like broth
First up, Dochi's pick: the hanwoo bone kalguksu. This might just be Donggok Jemyeon's signature dish.

It was piled with shredded beef and brisket. And the feature of this place!! Homemade noodles — they felt even chewier, which made it taste even better!

And the kimchi they serve alongside was seriously the kicker!! This kimchi with a hint of salted shrimp had a refreshing tang that paired perfectly with the kalguksu.

Dochi said the broth was seriously the best and pushed it toward me — the kind of flavor that makes you want to mix in rice. If it hadn't been for the pancake, I would've ordered rice right then and mixed it in. Pure savory gomtang! Oh, and rice is free here, so if you want more broth, definitely add rice and mix it in!!

Yukgaejang kalguksu: the spicy bowl to order for a hangover
This is the yukgaejang kalguksu I ordered. A rich bone broth with yukgaejang seasoning added, chewy homemade noodles, plenty of bean sprouts, and shredded beef plus brisket — it was so good.

You could make the broth spicier, but I just went with the default level. Maybe because of the homemade noodles, they held onto the broth so well that the noodles tasted even better as I ate — this would be perfect as hangover food..!!

Seafood chive pancake: crisp outside, soft inside, full of shrimp and squid
Last, the seafood chive pancake! It'd be a shame to order kalguksu without a pancake — a crispy pancake piled high with big shrimp and squid. It was so generous, I couldn't believe it. They cut it into pieces for easy eating, but we decided tearing the pancake by hand was the best way to eat it.

The outside was really crispy but the inside was moist — crisp-outside-tender-inside in its truest form.

Normally, after kalguksu and then a pancake on top, I'd be too full to finish, but we seriously ate every single bite — saying "I'm so full" while still cleaning our plates. That's exactly the sign of something delicious — genuinely so good. And even as we sat there watching the rain get heavier and wondering what to do, people kept coming in.. I thought, this really is a great restaurant in downtown Daegu.

Is Donggok Jemyeon Dongseong-ro worth a second visit?
Next to the exit door, they'd set out yakult drinks with a note saying "take one each" — so we each grabbed one on our way out ෆ Thanks to the rich hanwoo bone broth and homemade noodles, the kalguksu tasted even better, plus the crispy pancake on top!! We left having had a very satisfying lunch. The combo of a mild kalguksu and a spicy kalguksu to share was something we really loved too — a place I'd recommend to anyone looking for a Dongseong-ro Korean restaurant or a great spot in downtown Daegu: Donggok Jemyeon.
