Raw beef restaurant in Chilgok, Daegu for dinner with parents: Bonghwa

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bonjeom (봉화생고기 본점) is a restaurant in Guam-dong (Chilgok), Buk-gu, Daegu, specializing in mungtigi (thick-cut fresh raw beef) and other raw beef. The writer's mom, who rarely says what she wants to eat, picked Bonghwa Saenggogi Bonjeom herself. They ordered the new raw chadol (beef brisket) sashimi half-and-half, and Mom was very happy with the generous complimentary spread of tripe, raw liver, tteokbokki and cabbage jeon, plus the dipping sauce. Bonghwa Saenggogi Bonjeom is a solid choice for a mungtigi dinner out with your parents in Chilgok.

After shopping with a baby, the writer had the seafood boil platter (medium heat) with added abalone for dinner. The portion left two people stuffed with food to spare, the octopus was especially tender, and baby chairs, baby water and sofa seats made eating out with a baby easy. After many meals indoors, the writer sat outside for the first time, ordering a Texas Platter for 2 and the signature Witch Soup (마녀스프), then roasting marshmallows over the outdoor fire. Outdoor seating at Modak Texas Barbecue is for guests with pets or parties of 3 or more, and with screen ordering, baby chairs and friendly help finding a shady seat, it is a place worth coming back to.

Japanese restaurant in Daegu: chashu cold soba with Dad, Myeonsikdang

Myeonsikdang Daegu Bogeondae (면식당 대구보건대점) is a Japanese ramen, soba and katsu restaurant on Yeongsong-ro in Buk-gu, Daegu, near Daegu Health College. The writer went around 5 p.m. with her father and husband, and the three shared one order each of chashu cold soba, spicy tonkotsu ramen and handmade sirloin katsu, along with free unlimited rice and self-serve broth, kimchi and pickled radish. With its varied menu, Myeonsikdang Daegu Bogeondae is a good place for a group to pick different dishes, share bites and enjoy a filling meal.

Gunwi camping BBQ with a baby: bring baby food and fruit, Palkkongi

Palkkongi is a camping restaurant at the foot of Palgongsan in Bugye-myeon, Gunwi, Daegu, where you rent a tent for 3 hours and grill your own meat inside after it is charcoal-seared. A baby, her grandpa and the blogger shared Iberico pork neck, Korean pork belly and kimchi fried rice in a 2–4 person tent (₩20,000), then played by the creek, on the spinning swing and at the dog playground, and still found 3 hours too short. Because Palkkongi allows baby food and fruit, it is an easy, no-gear outing with a baby.

For lunch the day after a stay nearby, the writer had abalone mulhoe (chilled raw seafood soup) with 3 large abalone and a snow crab rice bowl with more crab than rice, plus a free spicy fish stew loaded with meaty fish. For a meal in Guryongpo that truly feels like a Pohang trip, Hoetjip Jin's abalone mulhoe and snow crab rice bowl combo is a strong pick.

Pohang crab restaurant with a high chair: red crab course, Dongnam Hoe

Dongnam Hoe Sikdang (동남회식당) is a snow crab and red crab restaurant on Jukdosijang-gil in Pohang's Jukdo Market. For the first meal of a first Pohang trip with a baby, the red crab course for 2 brought mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), mixed sashimi, side dishes, steamed red crab and seafood ramen, so much food that the spicy fish stew went uneaten. With a high chair and friendly staff, Dongnam Hoe Sikdang is a good place for families with a baby to enjoy a crab course in Jukdo Market.

After a family outing, the writer's family ordered 2 Geumdeungeo sets and 2 bulgogi sets for dinner and enjoyed the free first-visit cockle taster, the banchan self-bar, scorched-rice tea from the rice pot and the drink corner. Even the parents had nothing but praise, making Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch a very satisfying family dinner.

Sawol, Daegu Korean lunch with baby and mother-in-law: Cafe Dong-i

Cafe Dong-i Sicheol (카페동이 시지점) is a Korean restaurant on Sinmae-ro 16-gil near Sinmae Station and Sawol in Suseong-gu, Daegu. After an outing to Sawol with her mother-in-law, husband and baby, the writer ordered a small nuruk-aged sticky-rice tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork), tuna yeolmu (young radish greens) bibimbap and a crispy whole-shrimp Japanese curry set. The staff offering baby seaweed soup before being asked, plus unlimited fried eggs, multigrain rice and barley gangjeong (puffed-grain snack), stood out. Cafe Dong-i Sicheol is a filling family lunch spot for everyone from babies to grandparents.

Family café in Chilgok 3-jigu, Daegu: espresso con panna at Pascucci

The writer visited Pascucci Daegu Chilgok3jigu-jeom with her mom, her older brother and her child, and each picked a favourite: the seasonal Yeoju rice latte, the in-store-only espresso con panna, a coconut coffee granita and a 3,300-won vanilla choux. Verdict: even a family with very different tastes can each find a satisfying order at Pascucci Daegu Chilgok3jigu-jeom.
