Gyeongju Korean restaurant for dakbokkeumtang: Dongyang Baekban

I was looking for a good place to eat in Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil and found this little gem! It may be true anywhere, but I think Hwangridan-gil is especially lovely in autumn and on a weekday afternoon. There were just enough people around, some international visitors too, and the atmosphere was so nice,,! haha

Dongyang Baekban in the heart of Hwangridan-gil

It's right in the center of Hwangridan-gil. I was so happy to find a great Korean restaurant in Gyeongju. Dongyang Baekban (동양백반) somehow made me feel like I was visiting my maternal grandparents' home! It had such a warm, familiar feeling.

Ordering at the table

You can conveniently order at the table. We tried the medium dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) and gondre namulbap (rice with Korean thistle greens). A basic bowl of plain rice is not included. These days, I really appreciate restaurants with easy payment options. I also liked that they had various rice dishes, drinks, and sides as well as main dishes.

Review event and the window view

If you enter the review event, you can draw a prize. I got ₩10,000, but I couldn't receive it because I used Super Members ㅠ It was second prize, so it felt like such a shame. I even wished I had transferred it to another guest through TOSS instead.. haha Still! The view out the window was pretty.

Side dishes like something Grandma would make

As you'd expect from a Korean restaurant in Hwangridan-gil, there were lots of basic side dishes too, haha. I liked the bean sprouts and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) best, hehe. Best of all, the gondre rice came alongside them and was so tasty. Everything was clean-tasting, like food Grandma would make! I also liked that it wasn't too salty. There were garlic scapes too, but I didn't eat those at all...

Fragrant, generously portioned gondre namulbap

The gondre rice is ₩6,000, and I think I'd definitely order it again even on another visit.. Recommended for anyone who likes gondre greens! A whole bowl of rice plus greens! It was plentiful and I was so satisfied. They drizzle sesame oil over it too, making it wonderfully nutty and delicious 🤭

Dakbokkeumtang loaded with Sumi potatoes! It was set up with the side dishes, and we waited for it to cook ( •̀ .̫ •́ )✧ I loved that they piled on lots of mushrooms too 🍄🟫

Dakbokkeumtang cooked over a burner

We got ready to cook the dakbokkeumtang over the burner. I also really liked that it came with a boiled egg as a topping, hehe haha. It came to a boil quickly after just a little cooking, which was nice haha.

It had such a variety of ingredients: Sumi potatoes, vegetables, chicken, and glass noodles! φ(゜▽゜*)♪ I also really loved all the vegetables haha.

Mild, tender boneless dakbokkeumtang

Potato and egg together. Chicken and vegetables together. Even the glass noodles were so good! It wasn't very spicy—less intense, yet with a soft, easy-to-swallow feel, haha. Since it was boneless, I thought this dakbokkeumtang would be especially great for couples too, haha!! I recommend it for a Hwangridan-gil restaurant date.

Even better with rice

The combination of rice and dakbokkeumtang was so good too. It's somewhere I already want to eat again while writing this post! haha

Next time, I want to try the chicken hot pot

Please take a look at the interior and signature dishes too. The atmosphere and food were both great! haha To survive in Hwangridan-gil, it really does have to be delicious.. 🤭 Next time, I want to try the chicken hot pot!!

If you want a nicely prepared Korean meal in Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, I recommend it. It seems like a restaurant that would satisfy you whether you come with family, a partner, friends, or anyone else!
