Dongseong-ro, Daegu BBQ after kids' bedtime: Suyeong Naengsam

Suyeong Naengsam Daegu Direct Store is a frozen pork BBQ restaurant on Dongseong-ro in Jung-gu, Daegu, right in front of Jungangno Station near Banwoldang. After putting the kids to bed, the writer went late in the evening with a friend, walked in with no wait, and ordered 4 servings of flash-frozen shaved pork (31,600 won) and a meat doenjang stew; the pa kimchi pairing and the doenjang sul-bap finish were the highlights. With pork at 7,900 won per 100g and parking out front, Suyeong Naengsam is a solid frozen pork spot for drinks in Dongseong-ro.

Suseong, Daegu Korean restaurant after Children's World: Cafe Dongyi

Cafe Dongyi Branch 1 is a Korean restaurant on the ground floor of the SK Leaders View building in Dusan-dong, Suseong, Daegu. After a weekend visit to Daegu Children's World, the writer came to Cafe Dongyi with a 2-year-old and a baby just past their first birthday. They ordered the ₩16,900 single-serving brazier Eonyang-style crispy beef bulgogi set, the ₩12,900 fire-grilled jeyuk (spicy pork) set and the ₩4,900 Little Explorer bulgogi kids' meal. With a kids' menu, high chairs and free fried eggs and extra rice, Cafe Dongyi Branch 1 is an easy Korean restaurant for eating out with two small children.

Suseong, Daegu taco restaurant: kid-free date night birria, Habanero

Habanero Daegu Sincheon is a Mexican restaurant at 58 Sincheondong-ro 96-gil in Suseong-gu, Daegu, serving tacos, quesadillas and fajitas on two floors. On a rare date with his wife without the kids, the writer ordered a beef cheese taco (12,900 won), a birria taco (11,900 won) and a beef quesadilla (15,900 won). He found that each had its own appeal: a crispy cheese skirt, softly spiced brisket and a quesadilla packed with meat and cheese. With wide table spacing and parking out front, Habanero Daegu Sincheon is an easy, comfortable pick for a couple's date night.

Dongseong-ro, Daegu kalguksu with rice in leftover bone broth: Donggok

Donggok Jemyeon is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) shop on Gukchaebosang-ro in Dongseong-ro, Jung-gu, Daegu, that makes its own fresh noodles. The writer and his wife ordered Korean beef (hanwoo) bone broth kalguksu (13,000 won) and yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) kalguksu (14,000 won), both with extra meat, plus a half plate of gabrisal suyuk (boiled pork shoulder cap) for 10,900 won. They then added a bowl of rice to the leftover bone broth and nearly emptied the bowls. Thanks to its rich hanwoo bone broth and tender suyuk, Donggok Jemyeon is a downtown Daegu kalguksu shop worth revisiting on a chilly day.

Daegu Korean restaurant: soy stone galbi on a 3rd visit, Bujasikdang

Banwoldang Bujasikdang is a Korean restaurant near Banwoldang Station in Jung-gu, Daegu, serving fire-grilled dishes such as stir-fried squid, spicy stir-fried pork (jeyuk) and stone galbi (marinated pork ribs). Having already tried the squid and pork stir-fries, the writer returned with his wife for a third visit. This time they ordered fire-grilled stone galbi for 2 (₩28,000): thick, tender pork ribs in a sweet-salty soy marinade, served with free country cheonggukjang-doenjang stew (fermented soybean stew) and black rice. On days when sweet marinated meat appeals more than spicy stir-fries, Banwoldang Bujasikdang's stone galbi is a good fit.

Daegu bossam with toddlers after Gukchae-bosang Park: Uldong Bossam

Uldong Bossam (울동보쌈) is a Korean restaurant specialising in suyuk (boiled pork) and bossam (boiled pork wraps) in Gyo-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, near the Dongin annex of Daegu City Hall. After an outing to Gukchae-bosang Park with children aged 31 months and 18 months, the writer had the bossam set and the suyuk rice bowl set, both with extra meat (12,900 won each), plus a cheese potato pancake, and both kids happily ate the moist pork jowl and pork belly suyuk. With weekend parking at the Dongin annex and baby chairs, Uldong Bossam is an easy choice for a family meal with young children.

Chinese restaurant with baby chairs in Sinam-dong, Daegu: Machai

Machai Jjamppong Sinam Branch is a jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) specialist Chinese restaurant on Ayang-ro in Sinam-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu. The writer returned after 2 weeks with two children aged 31 months and 17 months, ordered a large jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), beef brisket jjamppong and mini tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and was pleased with the deeply smoky jjamppong, the glutinous rice tangsuyuk the kids ate happily, the baby chairs, the baby tableware and the wide spacing between tables. For a family meal with small children in Sinam-dong, Machai Jjamppong Sinam Branch is an easy choice.

Daebong-dong Korean restaurant, gim wraps with seed jeotgal: Hyangtaek

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a neat Korean rice restaurant in Daebong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, near Gyeongdae Hospital Station and Kim Kwang-seok Street. After enjoying Hyangtaek's Dongdaegu Station branch, the writer ordered Spanish mackerel gondre rice, a beef bulgogi rice bowl (14,000 won each) and a mushroom platter (6,000 won) at Hyangtaek Daebong Branch near work, wrapping rice and seed jeotgal (salted seafood with seeds) in gopchang gim and refilling the gim several times. With wide table spacing and baby chairs, Hyangtaek Daebong Branch suits meals with parents, wedding invitation get-togethers and catch-ups with friends.

Daegu beef grill: fresh galbi, 9dan Set and iced coffee at Gogi 9dan

Siznique Shinsegae Department Store Daegu Branch is a seasonal fruit cake shop in Sweet Park on the B1 floor of Shinsegae Department Store in Dong-gu, Daegu. The writer bought a Floral Peach No. 1 at Siznique on a weekend for their mother's birthday without waiting, and the cake was packed with peaches inside as well as on top, so everyone from the kids to the adults loved it. For a pretty birthday cake loaded with fruit, Siznique's Floral Peach is a good choice.

Daegu Korean restaurant: 50-min lunch wait for stone galbi, Banwoldang

Banwoldang Bujasikdang is a fire-grilled Korean restaurant on Gwandeokjeong-gil in Jung-gu, Daegu. The writer arrived with his wife at 12:00 on a weekday and waited 50 minutes for stone galbi for two (₩28,000). The free country-style cheonggukjang (fermented soybean) stew, black rice and refillable fried burdock were all satisfying. Banwoldang Bujasikdang is a good spot for a family meal, and on weekdays arriving around 11:30 or after 1:00 p.m. cuts the wait.

Baby-friendly galbi BBQ near Banwoldang, Daegu: Jangjak Saenggalbi

Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno Main Branch (벽돌생갈비 종로점) is a charcoal-grilled fresh galbi (beef short rib) restaurant in Jongno, Jung-gu, Daegu, between Banwoldang Station and Jungangno Station, where staff grill the meat at your table. The writer visited for dinner with his wife and their 15-month-old second child and ordered one plate of fresh galbi (58,000 won) and doenjang stew (5,000 won). A complimentary cypress-steamed dish, icy radish salad and staff who grill the galbi and even remove the bones made the meal easy with a small child. For parents looking for galbi near Banwoldang with a little one, Jangjak Saenggalbi Jongno is a good choice.
