Izakaya in Suyu, Seoul: abalone pasta and jjamppong set at Bunko
In short
Bunko Suyu is a Japanese-style izakaya on the second floor, tucked inside the Suyu food alley near Suyu Station in Gangbuk, Seoul. The 2-person set at Bunko Suyu covered five dishes (menchi-katsu, sashimi, sushi, abalone pasta and jjamppong, a spicy seafood noodle soup), with the abalone pasta standing out most and the spicy jjamppong cleanly cutting through the richness at the end. Bunko Suyu is a relaxed Suyu Station bar for sipping cheongha (clear rice wine) and talking over an unhurried meal.

I was looking for a good-vibe izakaya near Suyu Station and ended up at Bunko Suyu! It's famous for its 2-person set that lets you try everything at once — sashimi, menchi-katsu, sushi, abalone pasta, and jjamppong — so I went in with high expectations.
To cut to the chase: the set is seriously well-priced for how much you get, and every single dish was good, making it a great Suyu Station spot for a date or a few drinks.

- A good-vibe izakaya, recommended for a date course — Bunko Suyu

Tucked into the Suyu food alley, it was a convenient spot to swing by after work or for an evening get-together. From the outside it looks cozy and small, but once you step in, the Japanese-style atmosphere really hits you — beyond what I expected.

From solo drinks to dates: the mood at Bunko Suyu
Bunko Suyu had a really nice atmosphere thanks to the soft lighting and wood-tone interior. With both bar seats and regular tables, it works well for solo drinking, dates, and friend gatherings alike.
Rather than loud and bustling, the mood was good for conversation, so it was easy to relax and enjoy a drink and a meal.

What's in the Bunko Suyu 2-person set
We ordered the Bunko Suyu 2-person set menu. It runs through menchi-katsu, sashimi, sushi, abalone pasta, and jjamppong, so it felt really generous for the price right from the start.
- Menchi-katsu
- Sashimi
- Sushi
- Abalone pasta
- Jjamppong

We ordered a soju to go with it — though I'm a cheongha person myself, haha.

The Korean melon salad was great too.

Menchi-katsu
The menchi-katsu came out first, crispy on the outside and juicy inside. The first bite was packed with meaty flavor, and it paired really well with the accompanying sauce. It wasn't greasy — nicely clean-tasting, which made it a perfect starter.

Sashimi
The sashimi was much fresher than I expected. It had the chewy texture of aged sashimi and was clean with no fishy taste at all. The slices were cut to a good thickness with a nice bite, and it made a great drinking companion too. Anyone who loves raw fish would really enjoy this.

Sushi
The sushi was also satisfying — the fish was fresh. The rice was seasoned just right and paired well with the fish, so I kept eating without feeling weighed down. Even as part of a set, the quality was good, which made it feel like great value for money.

Abalone pasta
This was the dish I enjoyed most. The savory flavor of the abalone was deeply soaked into the sauce, and the rich, thick texture was really appealing.

The noodles were cooked just right too, and I never got tired of it — finished the whole plate happily. If you love abalone, you should definitely try this.

Jjamppong
The jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) that came out last had a memorably spicy, deep broth. The earlier dishes could feel a bit rich, but the jjamppong cleaned everything up nicely at the end. The broth was full-bodied and loaded with ingredients, so it easily held up as a main dish on its own.

For your reference.
Was one Bunko Suyu 2-person set enough?
Ordering just the one 2-person set at Bunko Suyu was enough to enjoy a wide range of dishes, and I left really satisfied. If you're looking for a good-vibe bar near Suyu Station, a great sashimi spot, or an izakaya, I'd recommend Bunko Suyu.
I especially liked that a single order gave us so much variety, and each dish was good quality, which made for a genuinely enjoyable meal. Next time I'd like to go back and try other sashimi options and the futomaki too!
