The writer ordered the Beefjeong Set (Medium) and tried the owner's homemade side dishes, Gangwon-do homemade kimchi grilled on the hot plate and kimchi mari guksu (noodles in kimchi broth). Nampo (남포) is a clam grill and seafood pub on Gyeongsanggamyeong-gil in Gyodong, Jung-gu, Daegu, best known for its outdoor patio seating. The writer booked Nampo on Naver a few weeks ahead and walked in without a wait. Sinsa Chinese course ₩25,000: butter tangsuyuk and 3 dim sum, Samsin

Samsin Garosu-gil is a Chinese course restaurant blending Korean, Chinese and Japanese cooking, a 5-minute walk from Sinsa Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Course A costs 25,000 won per person and brought gongalppang (hollow honey bread), egg white soup, three dim sum (xiaolongbao, hagau, siumai), butter-scented tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour pork), jajangmyeon and jjamppong, and yuja pudding, with a mango sorbet added for writing a review. For a full Chinese course in Sinsa-dong in the 20,000-won range, Samsin's Course A is the one to book.

Dongdaemun chicken hot pot with no wait and Sunhui makgeolli: Sunhuine

Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun is a Korean restaurant in the dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) alley of Dongdaemun in Jongno, Seoul. The famous shop next door runs a standard 30-minute wait, but Sunhuine seated us straight away for a chicken hot pot with rice cake and potato add-ons, the Sunhui makgeolli sold only here, and knife-cut noodles at the end. The self-serve banchan bar, where kimchi and chives can be refilled freely, was the best part of the meal.

Jongno 3-ga Seoul Korean BBQ: No. 36 in line at 4:30pm, Tapgol Gongwon

Tapgol Gongwon Jongno 3-ga Branch is an outdoor Korean BBQ restaurant on Supyo-ro by Jongno 3-ga Station in Jongno, Seoul. Tapgol Gongwon opens at 5pm, but arriving at 4:30pm still meant waiting number 36, and pork belly and pork neck for two were not enough, so a third serving was added alongside brisket doenjang stew. Since the first round of 35 seats fills all at once, getting your name on the waiting list before 4:30pm is the whole game here.
