Hanwoo BBQ restaurant in Chilgok with garden-view seats: Deulkkot Hanu

Deulkkot Hanu (들꽃한우) is a charcoal-grill 1++ hanwoo (Korean beef) BBQ restaurant with a large garden, set in a housing complex at the foot of Palgongsan in Dongmyeong-myeon, Chilgok, Gyeongbuk. The writer booked ahead with their child, took a garden-view window seat, grilled a half-and-half order of flower short rib and short rib over charcoal, and finished with doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew); even the writer's picky child gave Deulkkot Hanu a thumbs-up. With a first-floor restaurant and a second-floor guesthouse that can be used together, Deulkkot Hanu suits family meals and group gatherings well.

What is Deulkkot Hanu at Palgongsan like?
Deulkkot Hanu (들꽃한우) is a 1++ hanwoo charcoal-grill restaurant in a quiet housing complex at the foot of Palgongsan, in Dongmyeong-myeon, Chilgok, Gyeongbuk. We took a weekend drive to Palgongsan with our kid and found the beef restaurant of a lifetime! I wanted delicious hanwoo somewhere pleasant with fresh air, and tucked in the quiet housing complex was a pretty garden, like a secret garden I'd wandered into.

They insist on only top-grade 1++ ("two-plus") hanwoo, and our kid, who is usually a picky eater and a struggle at mealtimes, gave a thumbs-up and went on a full-on eating spree. The scenery was a feast for the eyes too, so I was excited before we even walked in. Let me walk you through the special moments we had at this Palgongsan BBQ spot!

Parking, entrance and atmosphere at Deulkkot Hanu
You park in the large lot above the restaurant and walk down a path to the building below. A cute puppy greeted us at the entrance, wagging its tail, and our kid loved it from the very start. We parked easily and strolled down through the garden.
Inside, the dining hall was much neater and more stylish than I expected, which really impressed me. The air was fresh, with no meat smell or greasiness, and the tables were spaced widely apart, which makes it a lovely place for a relaxed family conversation over dinner.
Next to the counter, the livestock grading certificate was openly displayed, and the MFDS hygiene grade mark with 3 stars (excellent) caught my eye right away. Seeing the certificates with my own eyes made me trust Deulkkot Hanu even more before eating.
Reserve ahead for a garden-view window seat
We had reserved in advance, so they had carefully set up the best seat in the house for us, with a wide-open view of the garden outside. Green trees and the garden filled the window, and my eyes were being treated the whole meal.

Deulkkot Hanu menu: half-and-half 1++ flower short rib and short rib
The menu specializes in 1++ flower short rib (kkotgalbisal) and regular 1++ short rib (galbisal), and honestly only top-grade cuts. With savory yukhoe (beef tartare) rounding out a solid lineup, I thought, yes, this is the real deal as a Palgongsan beef spot. We wanted to taste both cuts, so we ordered them half and half.

Hanjeongsik-style side dishes and charcoal
The side dishes (banchan) include young radish kimchi (yeolmu-kimchi), salad and seasoned raw crab (yangnyeom-gejang), plus seasoned sweet potato stems, eggplant, gungchae (a stalk vegetable), lotus root and wood ear mushroom, and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry). They arrived soon after we ordered, and each one was made with such care that I couldn't help exclaiming. The crunchy, refreshing radish kimchi, the zesty salad and the sweet-spicy crab were a given, and then came the upscale hanjeongsik (Korean table d'hôte)-style dishes that made me feel treated like a guest, plus glossy japchae, all laid out in a row.
Next, a clean grill with glowing red charcoal was brought to the center of the table. The heat was strong and a faint charcoal aroma rose up, so we were fully ready to grill.
Soon after, today's stars, the short rib and flower short rib, arrived looking magnificent! Seeing the marbling packed densely like snowflakes through the bright red meat, I gasped without meaning to. The freshness and texture were clear, and you can really tell it's a different class.
I also liked that they gave us a small dish of garlic and oil to roast on the grill. The garlic turned golden without burning and went perfectly with the beef.

The sangchu-jaerae (lettuce with scallion salad, pajeori) and wrap vegetables were plump and fresh, as if just picked from the field. The seasoning wasn't overly strong, just mild, tangy and sweet, which was perfect for cutting the richness of the meat.
How the charcoal-grilled 1++ flower short rib tastes
We quickly seared the surface of the 1++ flower short rib and short rib over strong charcoal and dipped it in salt and doenjang (soybean paste) seasoning. I carefully laid the bright red 1++ hanwoo on the heated grill to bring out the smoky aroma. With a sizzle as soon as it touched the grill, the savory smell of meat tantalized my nose. Over the strong charcoal, I seared the surface fast, as if coating it, so the juices wouldn't escape. Juice gathered softly on the surface as it turned golden, and it looked so appetizing. Gulp.
I first dipped a well-cooked piece in plain salt only and put it in my mouth, and it melted away without needing to chew. Savory juices burst out, and even with a little doenjang seasoning the flavor was deep. It was honestly heavenly.

So the meat wouldn't run out, I gently laid the remaining meat on the grill for a second round. I grilled it carefully, adding even more smoky aroma, and it was amazing that right to the last piece it never got tough and stayed tender. We ate so well.

Even the picky eater gave a thumbs-up
Our kid, who's really picky and normally a chore to feed, couldn't put the spoon down that day because the Deulkkot Hanu beef was so tender and delicious. Seeing that thumbs-up, I was so proud and happy!

Doenjang-jjigae to finish and Shine Muscat for dessert
After a hearty meal of beef at Deulkkot Hanu, we ordered extra doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew). It came bubbling in an earthenware pot, generously loaded with tofu and vegetables, and the deep, savory broth was superb. It was the best stew I've had lately.

When we finished the meal happily, the owner even brought out sweet, plump Shine Muscat grapes for dessert. After cleansing my palate with fruit, I felt happiness fill my whole body.
Deulkkot Hanu's second-floor guesthouse: can groups gather there?
The Deulkkot Hanu building has the restaurant on the first floor and a guesthouse (pension) space on the second. I went upstairs and there was a guesthouse space too?! For customers who have dined, it can be used for gatherings, groups, company dinners or workshops, with no headcount limit and outside food allowed. With the great view and air, I thought it'd be a perfect spot to grill hanwoo at Deulkkot Hanu for round one, then enjoy a relaxed group get-together for round two.

For details on using the guesthouse, you can ask the owner directly and they'll kindly explain.
