Gumi loach soup restaurant with a toy-motorcycle kids' room: Irojeong

In short

Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch is a newly opened Korean restaurant serving chueotang (loach soup) and black goat dishes near Sangmo Church in the Geumosan area of Gumi, Gyeongbuk. Visiting with a child, the writer ordered the mackerel and boiled pork loach soup set, hanwoo (Korean beef) seaweed soup and pork loin cutlet; the child spent the wait in the kids' play space, and after the meal the writer drank two cups of sipjeondaebotang (ten-herb tonic tea) in the coffee and traditional tea lounge. The wait at Irojeong is long, but the play space and dessert café make it a good fit for family meals with kids.

I visited Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch, newly opened near Geumosan in Gumi. If you like loach soup, this is a place worth trying at least once! The store is huge and the parking lot is spacious, so it was great for a family meal out.

Even I, someone who isn't a big fan of loach soup, found it delicious.. It's not overpowering, made with a broth steeped in sanghwang mushroom, so it has that healthy taste.. Plenty of older folks were eating there too.

I walked in admiring the exterior. With so many cars, I worried whether we'd even get a table today, but the turnover is fast!!!

Before and after the meal! There's a space where you can have coffee and traditional tea, which made for a relaxed finish. Sipjeondaebotang (ten-herb tonic tea) was so my type.. it was delicious 🥰🥰 I ended up drinking two cups...

If you're going with a kid: the kids' play space

Being a tasty restaurant, there were a lot of customers. The waiting line was quite backed up, but it was such a relief that there was a space for my kid to play!!!

Watching my kid ride a toy motorcycle was seriously adorable!! It was a relief that the wait time flew by.

Irojeong's menu

  • Sanghwang loach soup
  • Sanghwang black goat soup
  • Wild ginseng black goat boiled pork set
  • Pork cutlet
  • Hanwoo seaweed soup

Food for all ages!! I went with my kid, so we included pork cutlet and seaweed soup!!! Recommended!

Table setting at Irojeong

I ordered the mackerel boiled pork loach soup set, seaweed soup, and pork cutlet! My stomach was growling during the wait....

Self-bar side dishes and watermelon dessert

There's a self-bar for extra side dishes and even watermelon for dessert. Watermelon helps flush out sodium, perfect for cleansing the palate.

Neat basic side dishes plus the boiled pork that comes with the set!!! My kid really loved the boiled pork, I had the sweet potato fritters, and my brother had the loach fritters!!

Now the main event.. the loach soup, seaweed soup, grilled mackerel, and boiled pork were all delicious, no weak link. You have to try the loach soup. It's not overpowering, just a healthy, good-for-you flavor.

My kid polished off the seaweed soup and pork cutlet in no time. The beef in the seaweed soup is domestic, and the pork cutlet sauce was so good I ate some too.

Pumpkin sikhye and an ice cup brought from the self-bar

Lastly, I scooped up some pumpkin sikhye (sweet rice punch) from the self-bar. Ice cups were provided too, which was the best. Dessert sorted as well!!

How did the sanghwang loach soup taste?

I ordered the sanghwang loach soup, and the broth was rich but not overwhelming, so my spoon kept going back for more. The distinctive loach soup smell wasn't strong, so I think even first-timers would enjoy it. The side dishes were also served neatly one by one, so I emptied a bowl of rice in no time haha. Loved that there's a self-bar too, so you can grab as much of any side dish that's running low as you want!

A lot of people were also ordering the set with boiled pork and mackerel together, so I'd like to try that next time. After the meal, there's a space to have coffee and traditional tea, which made for a relaxed finish. If you're looking for a place in Gumi to nourish your body, give Irojeong — a well-known loach soup restaurant in Gumi and a favorite near Geumosan — a try.
