Mapo Station gyukatsu: weekend night wait & Sindongjin rice, Gyudo

In short

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a smoked gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) and yakiniku set-meal restaurant right in front of Mapo Station in Mapo, Seoul. On a late weekend evening date with her husband, the writer paid 47,000 won for a smoked gyukatsu set, a smoked yakiniku set and gamtae myeongran (pollock roe with gamtae seaweed). She was most impressed by the personal bangjja bronze grill, the Sindongjin rice pot rice and the sungnyung (scorched rice tea) made with a broth of your choice. Gyudo is a Mapo Station gyukatsu spot that suits dates and blind dates, and its bar seats make it easy for solo diners too.

Is there a wait at Gyudo on weekend evenings?

I went late on a weekend evening and there was still a wait 🫢 It's a Mapo restaurant that's famous with locals too!

Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok atmosphere and seating: good for dates and solo dining?

The inside of Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch has a great, upscale atmosphere too ❣️ (It's perfect as a blind date or date course!) The tables are spaced far apart, so you can eat comfortably.

There are bar seats as well, so people dining alone can enjoy it without feeling awkward 🍀

They have a range of broths and unlimited-refill cauldron rice. Pot rice comes with the set, and when you make nurungji-tang (scorched rice tea), you can pour in the broth you like, which felt new to me ✨ (No wonder it's a Mapo restaurant locals love!)

On our date, my husband and I ordered a smoked gyukatsu set (₩22,000), a smoked yakiniku set (₩22,000) and seaweed pollock roe (₩3,000), and the total came to ₩47,000. Gyudo has a variety of set menus, plus a kids' menu, noodles and side dishes, so you can eat to your taste 💯

  • 📍 Smoked yakiniku set ₩22,000
  • 📍 Seaweed pollock roe ₩3,000

We came as a date course with my husband ☺️

What does Gyudo's smoked gyukatsu set taste like?

The staff told us Gyudo's smoked gyukatsu set is smoked over wood in an offset smoker, and that it's the only premium gyukatsu of its kind in Korea 🫢 Let me start with the smoked gyukatsu set ❣️

Wood-smoked gyukatsu set

The coating is thin and golden rather than thick, and the inside stays nicely rare, so you can enjoy it however you like.

The custom-made bangjja bronze personal grill

A custom-made bronze (bangjja yugi) personal hearth‼️ Even the hearth is premium at this Mapo restaurant 😎 I liked being able to cook the meat golden brown to exactly the doneness I wanted.

Homemade myeongi (wild garlic leaf) wasabi and sauces

The myeongi wasabi (wild garlic-leaf wasabi) and all the sauces are homemade and go well with the gyukatsu, so try them in different ways 🍀 As for the taste, thanks to the smoking it's full of flavor, and the juices don't escape, so the texture is moist and tender. The savoriness of the meat meets the smoky aroma for a really upscale feel ✨

Sides: gamtae myeongran and soft-boiled egg

The seaweed pollock roe we ordered as a side adds a deep savory note, so I'll order it again when I come back‼️

The soft-boiled egg is totally my style ✨ Just imagine popping the yolk over freshly cooked rice, how delicious is that ☺️

Smoked yakiniku set vs smoked gyukatsu set: which was better?

Gyudo's smoked yakiniku set is lightly seared first and then smoked before serving, just like the gyukatsu, so you get plenty of smoky aroma. Next, my review of the smoked yakiniku set ✨

The meat is surprisingly thick and has a beautiful color, so it looks great too 〰️

Thickly cut meat of the smoked yakiniku set

Just grill it on the hearth to the doneness you like and eat! My husband preferred the gyukatsu, and I preferred the yakiniku. The golden coating of the gyukatsu is great, but with the yakiniku you taste the meat itself more, and it's the kind of flavor I keep thinking about ❣️ The texture is so tender it nearly melts in your mouth, and you get the full flavor of the meat 💯

Sindongjin rice pot rice and broth sungnyung in the set

When you order a set at Gyudo, pot rice comes with it, and it's made with Sindongjin rice, so the stickiness and texture are impressive! The rice looks delicious even in the photo, doesn't it 🫢 (Of all the gyukatsu places I've visited, the rice here is number one..!)

I finished with nurungji-tang made with the broth I wanted 🍀
