The writer paid ₩51,800 for two at a weekday lunch and tried almost everything, from beef and seafood in clear broth to sushi and hot food. The writer also lists the dinner-only dishes that set lunch and dinner apart: yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), whelk, bonito, octopus, salmon and seasoned scallops. Verdict: Wabom Ulsan Mugeo Branch is a family-friendly shabu-shabu spot that offers good value and well-made beef and salad bar food.

Seomyeon Korean BBQ at the bar: sujebi doenjang stew for two, Anmin

On a third visit with her husband, the writer sat by a first-floor window and ordered the lemon pasta and shrimp rosé pasta at 17,000 won each; the torched lemon, the pistachio-brushed ham and the plump shrimp stood out. With its patio-style atmosphere and Jangan Public Parking Lot one minute away, Kueodeukkutteu is a date restaurant in Haenggung-dong worth recommending.

Yongin shabu-kalguksu: flat noodle timing, white broth, Yun Ujae

Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch is a shabu-kalguksu (shabu-shabu with knife-cut noodles) restaurant in Gogi-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin, that makes its own noodles. On a second visit, three women ordered 3 servings at 11,500 won each in step-2 white broth, added spicy chili paste, and worked through sirloin, flat kalguksu noodles and minari (water dropwort) fried rice. The key tip at Yun Ujae is to call the staff for the flat noodles while plenty of meat is still left, then wrap the noodles in the meat.

On a weekday at 1 PM, the writer waited behind 4 groups and took out 6 Zoblack salt breads (plain, pollock roe, churros, anbutter, sweet rice cake and Dubai) for ₩24,100. Zoblack's salt bread is crisp outside, soft and chewy inside, and each flavor is distinct enough to make picking and mixing fun.

Yeongtong conveyor sushi, 6 salmon plates and egg steak: Teukbyeolhan

Teukbyeolhan Chobap Yeongtong (특별한초밥 영통점) is a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Classia building in the Yeongtong Station shopping district in Suwon, where every plate costs ₩1,890. On this visit the writer ate 16 plates for ₩30,240, including at least six plates of salmon as always, shrimp egg steak, an egg steak sushi that changed their mind about sushi-bar egg, flounder sliced by the chef on the spot and an extra-long flounder fin. For anyone looking for great salmon sushi, Teukbyeolhan Chobap Yeongtong is worth a trip for the salmon alone.

Late-night chicken galbi BBQ in Cheonho after Lotte World: Ondogye

Ondogye (온도계) is a charcoal-grilled chicken galbi restaurant on the jjukkumi (webfoot octopus) alley of Cheonho Rodeo in Gangdong, Seoul. After a Lotte World date, the writer and her husband waited 20 minutes for the Ondogye annex late on a weekend night, then had garlic salt chicken galbi for two, soy-marinated chicken galbi and salt-grilled chicken neck for 69,000 won in total. The thick garlic salt chicken galbi, grilled by staff from start to finish, is the top pick at a Cheonho chicken galbi spot even locals line up for.

Mapo Station gyukatsu: weekend night wait & Sindongjin rice, Gyudo

Premium Gyukatsu Gyudo Mapo Gongdeok Main Branch is a smoked gyukatsu (breaded beef cutlet) and yakiniku set-meal restaurant right in front of Mapo Station in Mapo, Seoul. Gyudo is a Mapo Station gyukatsu spot that suits dates and blind dates, and its bar seats make it easy for solo diners too.

Hongdae burger shop, low-salt patty DUMB Burger set: Deombeogeo

Deombeogeo Bonjeom (덤버거 본점) is a handmade burger restaurant in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station on the 2nd floor of the Yomi Gyoja Udon building. On a date with her husband, the writer ordered a DUMB Burger set (18,900 won) with less salt in the patty and a B.L.T Cheeseburger on its own (11,900 won), and the reduced-salt patty still tasted well seasoned rather than bland. Because Deombeogeo Bonjeom lets you adjust even the patty's saltiness, it is an easy burger pick in Yeonnam-dong for salt-sensitive eaters.
