Cheonan budae-jjigae revisit, Songtan pot out in 5 minutes: Cheongwon

Cheongwon Restaurant: Cooking Budae-jjigae, Cheonan Dujeong Main Branch is a budae-jjigae (Korean army stew) restaurant a 10-minute walk from Dujeong Station Exit 1 in Cheonan, Chungnam. On a return visit with a partner who loves Cheongwon Restaurant, the writer ordered the same Songtan budae-jjigae for two (22,000 won) plus thin-sliced beef brisket (5,000 won); the stew arrived in under 5 minutes and was so generous there was no room for ramyeon noodles. Verdict: for a proper budae-jjigae lunch or dinner near Dujeong Station, Cheongwon Restaurant is the answer.

Soft tofu shabu-shabu for 2 in Baekseok-dong, Cheonan at Dongchundang

Dongchundang Shabu Kalguksu (동춘당샤브칼국수) Cheonan Baekseok is a newly opened shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant in Baekseok-dong, Cheonan. Two people ordered the Chodang soft tofu shabu kalguksu for 2 (28,000 won) and Eonyang-style crispy bulgogi (9,900 won), and the course of young radish barley rice, mugwort noodles and Bangagan Cham fried rice felt like a meal for 4. With generous portions and great flavor, Dongchundang Shabu Kalguksu is a Baekseok-dong shabu-shabu spot worth revisiting.

Spicy pork & cutlet sets with Mom in Sintanjin: Baengnyeon Boribap

Baengnyeon Boribap (백년보리밥) is a Korean restaurant on Sintanjin-ro in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, built around boribap (barley rice) and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew). On a visit with a mother who loves Korean set meals, the writer ordered the jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) set and the Korean-pork donkatsu (pork cutlet) set at 14,500 won each, and found the 12 unlimited side dishes, the unexpectedly crispy cutlet and the misugaru (roasted-grain drink) dessert all satisfying. For a hearty Korean meal with family in Daejeon, Baengnyeon Boribap in Sintanjin is worth recommending.
