If you're looking for a good beef restaurant in Sejong, I'd recommend Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Sejong Boram Branch in Boram-dong. The menu is broadly split into pork and beef, and — fitting for a city with so many kids — there's also an indoor playroom, and it's absolutely massive. It reminded me of those huge BBQ restaurant playrooms that were trendy in the 2000s.

Where is Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Sejong Boram Branch?

Exterior of Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant Sejong Boram Branch on the 2nd floor of a commercial building

Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant is on the 2nd floor of a commercial building. You'll see it right away whether you take the elevator or the stairs. The restroom is right by the entrance.

Inside Hanmaeum: playroom and group tables

The interior is really spacious. It felt like five separate commercial units had been combined into one BBQ restaurant. I loved how open and roomy it felt.

There's also a playroom for kids, and it's a considerable size. There are meat tables right in front of the playroom too, so parents can watch their kids play while eating. From a parent's point of view it looked really convenient.

Large indoor playroom in front of a meat table

Across from the playroom there's an even bigger open area. So Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant would also be a great choice if you're looking for a gathering spot or a group dinner venue in Sejong.

Since it's open until 3am, you can drop by anytime you get hungry.

Self-bar with lettuce, garlic, and sauces

The self-bar had a nice variety — lettuce, bean sprouts, garlic, onion, sauces, all laid out very neatly. The first round of side dishes comes to your table automatically, so there's no need to fetch them yourself.

There's a coffee vending machine too, so you can grab a coffee on your way out.

Hanmaeum menu and what we ordered

Here's the menu board. We debated between pork and beef that day, but ended up going with the beef half-set to get some quality protein in.

  • Zero-sugar cola x2 ₩4,000

Side dishes and the free samgyetang and jjolmyeon event

First, the basic table setup. A doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) came out right away, ready to be simmered at the table,

along with seasoned lettuce, corn salad, and kimchi,

sliced green onion, onion, and lettuce wraps,

plus seasoned bean sprouts and wasabi.

And apparently they're currently running a free samgyetang and jjolmyeon event. The samgyetang had that warm, fatty richness like galbitang (short rib soup), and it paired really well with drinks. The jjolmyeon sauce was sweet and tangy, and went great with the beef. Getting this much as a basic setup felt genuinely generous.

Drinks: zero-sugar cola at Hanmaeum

Two glasses of zero-sugar cola

We also ordered zero-sugar cola. Whenever I order zero cola, I always wonder whether I'll get Coke Zero or Pepsi Zero — but if you just ask for

actually — if you just say "zero cola," the staff bring whichever they have, and you just go with it.

How does the 41,000-won beef half-set taste, cut by cut?

Plate of beef half-set with a variety of cuts

Here's the beef half-set on its own. Its biggest strength is that you get to taste multiple cuts at once — the plate arrives loaded with a variety of meat, so it's fun from the very first bite.

Beef cuts placed on the grill to start cooking

We started grilling right away. If you stick to just one cut the whole time, the flavor can start to feel monotonous at some point, but with different cuts each having slightly different textures and aromas, it was great for switching between them. What impressed me most was the quality of the meat itself. Even the savory aroma rising as the surface cooked was on another level, and once cooked to the right point, the juiciness and meaty aroma came through naturally.

Overall the meat had a nice tender bite. That doesn't mean it was mushy, though — the natural springiness of the meat was still there, so it had just the right amount of chew.

Personally, when I eat beef I prefer not to cook it all the way through — just searing the surface well while keeping the inside moist — and grilling it this way really brought out the meat's strengths even more.

A piece of beef seared on the outside and kept juicy inside

It was delicious just eaten as is. It's even better with a simple dip in salt.

Golden brown grilled upper sirloin

The upper sirloin was also grilled nicely. The tender texture, the right amount of springiness, and the flavor that came through more the more you chewed were all really good.

When grilled just right, you can set it aside and eat it slowly later without it turning tough. Beef really does taste best when it's cooked just to the right point.

Grilled beef cuts with varying textures

Some cuts were soft and juicy, while others were a bit firmer with a stronger meaty aroma.

Multiple beef cuts cooking on the grill

So there was fun in how the flavor and texture shifted a little each time you moved on to the next cut right after the last bite.

Picking up a piece of grilled beef

True to its name, the beef half-set let us enjoy multiple cuts together, and I really liked that about it.

A piece of beef served with onion

When the meat quality is this good, it's best not to pile on too many sauces and just keep the combinations simple.

I've been watching my sodium intake lately, so I skipped the salt and instead dipped it in onion lightly touched with sesame sauce. Eating the beef alongside the samgyetang chicken that came with it was also a nice, unexpected treat.

Tangy jjolmyeon provided free as part of the event

The jjolmyeon was also bouncy and tangy, and it woke up the appetite nicely. Eating the beef half-set at Hanmaeum Butcher Restaurant in Boram-dong, Sejong, I found you could fully enjoy the flavor of the meat itself without needing much extra seasoning. If you're looking for a beef restaurant in Sejong, I'd recommend this one without hesitation.
