Cheongju rice cake café summer choco sulgi and honey tteok: Tteokmama
In short
Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch is a rice cake (tteok) shop with a café space in Yullyang-dong, Cheongju, selling gift tteok, 100-day tteok and event tteok. On a hot summer day the writer browsed the cool, air-conditioned store and took home five kinds (fruit chapssaltteok, handmade yakgwa, mini kkultteok, baeksulgi and choco sulgi), finding the fruit mochi full of juice and the choco sulgi chewy and not too sweet. Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch covers return gifts, everyday snacks and presents for parents in one stop.

Hello! If you're looking for gift tteok (rice cakes) or presentation rice cakes in Cheongju, Tteokmama Cheongju Yullyang Branch (떡마마 청주율량점) is worth a stop. I used to think of rice cake shops as places that just sell rice cakes, but that's not really the case anymore. Tteokmama Yullyang Branch has desserts and drinks alongside the tteok, plus a café space, so it was a great place to cool off on a hot summer day.

Tteokmama Yullyang Branch sells not only gift tteok but also 100-day tteok, event tteok, gift sets and more. They also sell traditional drinks like sikhye (sweet rice punch) and iced ssanghwa tea.

If you're trying to figure out a gift, the packaging is clean and neat, which should be satisfying. While looking around the store I wanted to try every single drink on the menu, haha.

A summer rice cake café to sit and rest in
Tteokmama Yullyang Branch has a café area with tables where you can enjoy your purchased tteok and drinks right away. I visited on a scorching summer day, and it was great to take a break in the cool interior.

There are various drinks that pair well with tteok, like sikhye, juice, and jujube tea, plus coffee and even the ube latte that's been trending lately!

The rice cakes I saw in the display case
There were also refreshing fruit chapssaltteok (fruit-filled sweet rice cakes).

Gift sets

Delicious tteok all around. What I liked best about Tteokmama Yullyang Branch was how neatly the store was organized, with the rice cakes displayed in an appealing way. It was fun deciding which items to pick, and there were plenty of gift-wrapped products too, so the selection was wide. The staff were also friendly. On a hot day like this, it's a nice place to cool off indoors while enjoying tteok with sikhye or iced ssanghwa tea.

Handmade yakgwa (honey cookie) and salt yakgwa, good both as gifts and snacks. A place that covers everything from a simple snack to a gift or a present for your parents — Tteokmama Yullyang Branch.

They even had Pororo drinks ready for kids.

The 5-pick haul: fruit mochi, mini kkultteok, baeksulgi and choco sulgi
I took home five kinds from Tteokmama Yullyang Branch: fruit chapssaltteok, handmade yakgwa, mini kkultteok (honey rice cakes), baeksulgi (white steamed rice cake), and choco sulgi.

The first thing I tried, the fruit mochi, had fresh fruit paired nicely with chewy glutinous rice skin. When I took a bite, the fruit juice was still alive, so it worked well like a dessert. The kkultteok had a chewy texture with honey sweetness spreading subtly through it — a flavor adults would like too. It wasn't too sweet, so I kept reaching for more.

The baeksulgi was moist and soft. It wasn't dry at all, with a plain flavor, and I thought it would go even better with milk or sikhye. The choco sulgi was more about chocolate aroma than chocolate taste — not sweet, just chewy with a sweet scent, which made me reach for it even more.

What I liked best was that the price wasn't as much of a burden as I expected! Picking several kinds didn't feel like too much of a splurge, so I got to try a variety of tteok, and I thought it would also be great to buy as a gift.

Why I'd recommend Tteokmama Yullyang Branch for Cheongju gift tteok

Next time I'd like to order sikhye and iced ssanghwa tea too, to properly enjoy the traditional desserts. If you're looking for a good rice cake shop in Cheongju, give this place a visit.
